Mosquito Host Selection Varies Seasonally with Host Availability and Mosquito Density [PDF]
Host selection by vector mosquitoes is a critical component of virus proliferation, particularly for viruses such as West Nile (WNV) that are transmitted enzootically to a variety of avian hosts, and tangentially to dead-end hosts such as humans. Culex tarsalis is a principal vector of WNV in rural areas of western North America. Based on previous work,

Chemical cues mediating aphid location by natural enemies
There is increasing evidence that chemical cues play a pivotal role in host selection by the natural enemies of aphids. We use Vinson's (1976) division of the host selection process into habitat location, host location and host acceptance for both ...

Planets spinning up their host stars: a twist on the age-activity relationship
It is a long-standing question in exoplanet research if Hot Jupiters can influence the magnetic activity of their host stars. While cool stars usually spin down with age and become inactive, an input of angular momentum through tidal interaction, as seen

A Parkes half-Jansky sample of GPS galaxies [PDF]
This paper describes the selection of a new southern/equatorial sample of Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies, and subsequent optical CCD imaging and spectroscopic observations using the ESO 3.6m telescope.

Plant Host-Associated Mechanisms for Microbial Selection
Plants serve as host to numerous microorganisms. The members of these microbial communities interact among each other and with the plant, and there is increasing evidence to suggest that the microbial community may promote plant growth, improve drought ...

Host Plant Specialization Driven by Sexual Selection [PDF]
We propose a new mechanism based on sexual selection to explain the evolution of diet breadth in insects. More specifically, we show that mate choice in females for certain diet-derived male pheromones can be exploited by maternal effect genes that preferentially place offspring on a specific host plant, resulting in specialization.

The role of multilevel selection in host microbiome evolution
Significance All animals carry microbes that can affect their health by providing essential nutrients or other services. There is an active debate about how hosts and their microbes coevolve.
