Examining the influence of cell size and bandwidth size on kernel density estimation crime hotspot maps for predicting spatial patterns of crime [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Hotspot mapping is a popular technique used for helping target police patrols and other crime reduction initiatives. There are a number of spatial analysis techniques that can be used for identifying hotspots, but the most popular in recent years is ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Endemism-based butterfly conservation: insights from a study in Southern Western Ghats, India

open access: yesJournal of Basic and Applied Zoology, 2021
Background The Western Ghats, a biodiversity hotspot in India harbours a high percentage of endemic species due to its unique and diverse habitats. These species which cannot survive elsewhere due to their specialised habitat requirements are at high ...

A Crime Prediction Model/Tool for Hotspot Mapping

open access: yesInternational Journal of Advanced Research in Science, Communication and Technology, 2023
The hotspot map is a popular analytics tool used to help law enforcement and crime reduction resources determine where to focus. Essentially, the hotspot map is used as a data-driven crime map to identify high-crime areas and places where police and other criminal activities should be used. The project uses crime data from a period before (already past)

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Leptospirosis Hotspot Areas and Its Association With Hydroclimatic Factors in Selangor, Malaysia: Protocol for an Ecological Cross-sectional Study

open access: yesJMIR Research Protocols, 2023
BackgroundLeptospirosis is considered a neglected zoonotic disease in temperate regions but an endemic disease in countries with tropical climates such as South America, Southern Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Stigmergy-based modeling to discover urban activity patterns from positioning data

open access: yes, 2019
Positioning data offer a remarkable source of information to analyze crowds urban dynamics. However, discovering urban activity patterns from the emergent behavior of crowds involves complex system modeling.

Biomass Productivity-Based Mapping of Global Land Degradation Hotspots [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2014
Land degradation is a global problem affecting negatively the livelihoods and food security of billions of people, especially farmers and pastoralists in the developing countries. Eradicating extreme poverty without adequately addressing land degradation is highly unlikely.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Electrophysiological sweet spot mapping in deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease patients

open access: yesBrain Stimulation
Background: Subthalamic deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) is a well-established therapy to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the STN-DBS sub-target remains debated.
