HTLV‐I‐associated myelopathy: Oligoclonal immunoglobulin G bands contain anti‐HTLV‐I p24 antibody
Annals of Neurology, 1988AbstractHuman T‐cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV‐I)‐associated myelopathy (HAM) and tropical spastic paraparesis belong to a new group of neurological diseases associated with retroviral infection. An HTLV‐I‐like virus has recently been implicated in multiple sclerosis as well.

Roles of HTLV-I p19 and Natural Antibody to HTLV-I in Host Immune Responses
1985Since the discovery of human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus type I (HTLV-I) [5], the immune status of HTLV-I- infected hosts, including patients with adult T cell leukemia (ATL), has not yet been sufficiently investigated [2–4]. As the first step in this kind of study, we have studied the nonspecific activity of peripheral mononuclear cells (PMNC) from

Diagnosis of HAM/TSP based on CSF proviral HTLV-I DNA and HTLV-I antibody index
Neurology, 2001The contribution of human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV-I) DNA by PCR in CSF and the intrathecal synthesis of antibodies to HTLV-I by the antibody index (AI) to the diagnosis of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy (HAM)/tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) were evaluated. Cases of spastic paraparesis compatible with HAM/TSP had increased AI for HTLV-I (60/73)

The humoral immune response against human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in the central nervous system (CNS) compartment and in the blood was investigated by enzyme immunoassay using 16 synthetic peptides corresponding to HTLV-I core and envelope sequences. We evaluated paired samples of cerebrospinal fluid and serum from HTLV-I seropositive

Adult T-Cell Leukemia with Anti-HTLV-I Antibody but No HTLV-I DNA in Tumor Cells
Acta Haematologica, 2001Adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is usually defined as a malignant disease of T cells infected by human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). In the present study, we describe a 49-year-old woman with an acute type ATL, whose leukemic cells do not contain the HTLV-I genome. Laboratory tests revealed an increase in abnormal lymphocytes with convoluted nuclei,

High seroprevalence of anti–HTLV‐I antibody in rheumatoid arthritis
Arthritis & Rheumatism, 1996AbstractObjective. To investigate the association between human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV‐I) infection and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Nagasaki, an area highly endemic for HTLV‐I infection.Methods. Sera from 113 female patients with RA and 19,796 female blood donors were screened for anti–HTLV‐I antibodies with a gelatin particle agglutination

[HTLV-I antibody screening of blood donors].
Beitrage zur Infusionstherapie = Contributions to infusion therapy, 1992Routine screening of 344,266 blood donations of approximately 200,000 donors for anti-HTLV-I was done by enzyme immuno assay (EIA). Repeatedly reactive samples were confirmed by Western Blot (WB) and radio immuno precipitation assay (RIPA). The prevalence of anti-HTLV-I in Bavarian blood donors is 0.02-0.026%. The specificity of HTLV-I-EIA is 99.95%.

Monoclonal Antibodies Define a Cellular Antigen Involved in HTLV-I Infection
Hybridoma, 1998The exact mechanism by which the human T cell leukemia viruses (HTLV) infects target cells remains unclear; although some molecules have been identified to be important in viral infection and entry. To investigate these phenomena, we generated a panel of monoclonal antibodies (MAb) against a B cell line (BJAB-WH) which is highly permissive for ...

HTLV-I-SPECIFIC ANTIBODY IN AIDS PATIENTS AND OTHERS AT RISK
The Lancet, 1984Serum samples from 440 acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients or individuals at risk for AIDS were examined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique for antibodies to HTLV-I core proteins. Specific antibodies were detected in 7% of AIDS patients, 7% of patients with lymphadenopathy, 0% of healthy homosexual men, and 12% of healthy

Lack of Evidence of HTLV-I Antibodies in the Finnish Population
Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 19895,287 serum samples from 2 different sources in Finland, people possibly at risk and healthy blood donors, were tested for the presence of HTLV-I antibodies. No positive cases were found. The result suggests that this virus is not endemic in Finland. 10 cases gave repeatedly a low positive value in the enzyme immune assay (EIA) test but were confirmed ...
