Of Beans, Weeds, and Human Cytogenetics

1979
Cell culture proved to be a superior system for kary-ological investigations, but it required considerable experience and a sizable expenditure. It was not practical or even feasible for many laboratories to set up cell culture facilities just for studying chromosomes.

Duodenal phytohaemagglutinin (red kidney bean lectin) stimulates gallbladder contraction in humans

Acta Physiologica, 2008
AbstractAim:  Lectins, carbohydrate‐specific proteins without enzymatic activity on the ligand, are daily ingested plant proteins which survive the passage through the gastrointestinal tract in a biologically active form. Their binding to glycan determinants of natural glycoconjugates can trigger biological effects. The lectin phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)

Green Coffee Bean Extract in Human Health

2016
The role of green coffee bean (GCB) in human health is of emerging interest to the nutraceutical field, especially given its role in improving metabolic syndrome, including weight management, hypertension, diabetes, and neuroprotection. GCB extract contains a novel antioxidant known as chlorogenic acid (also caffeoylquinic acid), which has been shown ...

Increased Osmotic Resistance of Human Erythrocytes Treated with Saline Extracts of the Fava Bean, Lima Bean, and Isoimmune Antibody of the ABO and Rh Systems

American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1972
An absolute increase in osmotic resistance to hypotonic saline solution was observed with erythrocytes agglutinated by fava bean extracts with or without 5% glucose. Similar osmotic resistance was obtained with blood group A cells, but not group B and O cells, incubated with the lima bean.

A comparison of the interactions of the mitogenic and nonmitogenic lima bean lectins with human lymphocytes.

The Journal of Immunology, 1981
Abstract Binding and mitogenic characteristics of the 2 Phaseolus lunatus (lima bean) lectins have been examined with human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Chemical cross-linking of the nonmitogenic lima bean lectin produced a species that stimulated human lymphocytes as well as or better than the mitogenic lima bean lectin, which is a T ...

Apparent digestibility of bean protein evaluated in humans, rats and in vitro assays

Nutrition Research, 1992
Abstract Common black beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris ) protein digestibility was evaluated with rats, humans and in vitro assays. Four products were studied: A) Cotyledons and seed coats cooked together, evaluated without cooking liquor; B) Cotyledons and seed coats cooked together, evaluated with cooking liquor; C) Cotyledons and seed coats cooked ...

Uptake and in-vitro bioaccessibility of toxic metals in cocoa beans: Human health risks

Environmental Geochemistry and Health
Cocoa-growing areas in Ghana have experienced a rise in mining activities affecting cocoa cultivation and increased concentrations of potentially toxic metals in the soil, which can accumulate in cocoa beans. This study evaluated potential toxic metal contamination in cocoa beans and soils from cocoa farms in mining and non-mining areas in Ghana.
