Hepatic Pathology in Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis: Ehrlichia chaffeensis Infection [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Clinical Pathology, 2003
Ehrlichia chaffeensis causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) that usually includes fever, myalgias, and pancytopenia and, in 80% to 90% of patients, elevations in serum transaminase levels. Thus, the pathology of liver injury was studied in liver tissues from 7 patients with laboratory-confirmed HME.

Effect of storage on the nitro blue tetrazolium reduction test in dog blood samples

open access: yesVeterinary Clinical Pathology, Volume 52, Issue 4, Page 596-600, December 2023., 2023
Abstract Introduction The nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test (NBTT) has been used for measuring the metabolic activity of phagocytes of mammals. Activated neutrophils transform NBT into formazan in the cytoplasm. The NBTT can detect the activation of neutrophils in peripheral blood and is used to assess neutrophil function in dogs.

Western Blot Analysis of Sera Reactive to Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis and Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis Agents [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 2001
ABSTRACT Laboratory diagnosis of human ehrlichioses is routinely made by an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using cultured ehrlichia-infected whole cells as antigen. Concern has been raised that incorrect diagnoses of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) or human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) may be made on the basis of ...

Ehrlichiosis‐Associated Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: A Case Series and Review of the Literature

open access: yesCase Reports in Hematology, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Background. Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) is a potentially life‐threatening tick‐borne illness. HME‐associated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare entity with a paucity of published literature regarding treatment and outcome. We present the clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of 4 patients at our institutions with HME ...

Glutathione Synthesis Regulated by CtrA Protects Ehrlichia chaffeensis From Host Cell Oxidative Stress

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Ehrlichia chaffeensis, a small Gram-negative obligatory intracellular bacterium, infects human monocytes or macrophages, and causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis, one of the most prevalent, life-threatening emerging zoonoses.

Ehrlichia canis rapid spread and possible enzooty in northern South Australia and distribution of its vector Rhipicephalus linnaei

open access: yesAustralian Veterinary Journal, Volume 100, Issue 11, Page 533-538, November 2022., 2022
Recent concerns have arisen in Australia regarding detections of the exotic bacterium Ehrlichia canis which has resulted in ehrlichiosis outbreaks. In Australia, it is spread by the tropical brown dog tick Rhipicephalus linnaei, formerly Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato tropical lineage.

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis [PDF]

open access: yesEar, Nose & Throat Journal, 2017
The hallmarks of symptomatic human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) include fever, headache, myalgia, nausea, malaise, transaminitis, and blood cell abnormalities. Previous case reports have described isolated cranial nerve palsies in infected patients but not hearing loss. We describe the onset of sudden sensorineural hearing loss in 2 patients with HME—a

Features of human monocytic ehrlichiosis laboratory diagnostics

open access: yesPerm Medical Journal, 2022
Objective. Using the data obtained in Perm Region as an example, to identify the effectiveness of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the diagnosis of Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME) at different periods from the onset of the disease, and to determine the role of HME in the structure of infections transmitted by ixodic ticks using PCR and enzyme ...

CtrA activates the expression of glutathione S-transferase conferring oxidative stress resistance to Ehrlichia chaffeensis

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2022
Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the causative agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), is a Gram-negative obligatory intracellular bacterium, which infects and multiplies in human monocytes and macrophages.

Ehrlichiosis Presenting as Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis in an Immunocompetent Adult

open access: yesIDCases, 2020
Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a fatal, immunologic syndrome characterized by dysregulated tissue inflammation. HLH can be either primary or secondary; with the latter typically resulting from an infection. Diagnosis requires five or more of
