Recent Trends in Biofabrication Technologies for Studying Skeletal Muscle Tissue-Related Diseases

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2021
In native skeletal muscle, densely packed myofibers exist in close contact with surrounding motor neurons and blood vessels, which are embedded in the fibrous connective tissue.

Human Skeletal Muscle Fiber Type Classifications [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Therapy, 2001
Human skeletal muscle is composed of a heterogenous collection of muscle fiber types.1–3 This range of muscle fiber types allows for the wide variety of capabilities that human muscles display. In addition, muscle fibers can adapt to changing demands by changing size or fiber type composition.

Enhancement of K+ conductance improves in vitro the contraction force of skeletal muscle in hypokalemic periodic paralysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
An abnormal ratio between Na+ and K+ conductances seems to be the cause for the depolarization and paralysis of skeletal muscle in primary hypokalemic periodic paralysis.

Calsequestrins in skeletal and cardiac muscle from adult Danio rerio [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Calsequestrin (Casq) is a high capacity, low affinity Ca2+-binding protein, critical for Ca2+-buffering in cardiac and skeletal muscle sarcoplasmic reticulum. All vertebrates have multiple genes encoding for different Casq isoforms.

RyR1-targeted drug discovery pipeline integrating FRET-based high-throughput screening and human myofiber dynamic Ca2+ assays. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Elevated cytoplasmic [Ca2+] is characteristic in severe skeletal and cardiac myopathies, diabetes, and neurodegeneration, and partly results from increased Ca2+ leak from sarcoplasmic reticulum stores via dysregulated ryanodine receptor (RyR) channels ...

Human cachexia induces changes in mitochondria, autophagy and apoptosis in the skeletal muscle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Cachexia is a wasting syndrome characterized by the continuous loss of skeletal muscle mass due to imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation, which is related with poor prognosis and compromised quality of life.

Engineered skeletal muscle recapitulates human muscle development, regeneration and dystrophy

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2022
Human pluripotent stem cell‐derived muscle models show great potential for translational research. Here, we describe developmentally inspired methods for the derivation of skeletal muscle cells and their utility in skeletal muscle tissue engineering with

Detection of chromosomal regions showing differential gene expression in human skeletal muscle and in alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma is a relatively common tumour of the soft tissue, probably due to regulatory disruption of growth and differentiation of skeletal muscle stem cells.

A ribonuclease from human skeletal muscle [PDF]

open access: yesBiochemical Journal, 1970
1. A ribonuclease has been prepared from human muscle by ammonium sulphate fractionation, heat treatment and ion-exchange chromatography. 2. The enzyme degrades polycytidylic acid and polyuridylic acid to the nucleoside 3′-phosphates, with nucleoside 2′:3′-cyclic phosphates as intermediates. Polyadenylic acid and polyguanylic acid are not attacked.

Estrogen receptor-α in female skeletal muscle is not required for regulation of muscle insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial regulation

open access: yesMolecular Metabolism, 2020
Objective: Estrogen receptor-α (ERα) is a nuclear receptor family member thought to substantially contribute to the metabolic regulation of skeletal muscle.
