Measurement and Statistical Analysis of Ozone from HVDC and HVAC Transmission Lines

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1985
Corona-generated ozone is one of the parameters considered in evaluating the environmental impact of high voltage ac and dc transmission lines. Measurements of ozone levels near an operating 735-kV ac line and near a test line with ±900-kV and ±450-kV dc line configurations are reported in this paper.

EM Environmental Evaluation of HVDC Transmission Lines

The 2006 4th Asia-Pacific Conference on Environmental Electromagnetics, 2006
Due to the high voltage operation of transmission lines, corona discharge phenomena are quite common around AC and DC transmission lines. A large amount of positive and/or negative ions are generated during the corona processes. The effects of corona space charge arising from HVDC transmission lines are much more significant than that in AC ...

Power Line Carrier Application Considerations Involving HVDC Transmission

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1980
When applying a power line carrier system involving HVDC transmission, the HVDC system characteristics should be understood. Expected carrier noise levels on the DC line and on the adjacent, parallel or crossing AC lines must be known to ensure proper application of carrier.

Corona Loss Characteristics of Practical HVDC Transmission Lines, Part I: Unipolar Lines

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1970
The method of calculating corona losses, developed for unipolar operation mode, is used in the paper to study corona loss characteristics of several practical HVDC transmission lines. Detailed results on the influence of various line parameters upon corona loss characteristics of monopolar lines with single as well as bundle conductors, of homopolar ...

Fault detection and localization for HVDC transmission lines

2018 Simposio Brasileiro de Sistemas Eletricos (SBSE), 2018
This paper evaluates a new method for faults detections in transmission lines in HVDC systems. The proposed method uses voltage and current synchronized data. The HVDC systems are simulated using MATLAB® software. The method for detection of faults in transmission line uses a self-adaptive threshold and presents a redundancy, which allows the detection

Adaptive Reclosing Method for Flexible HVDC Transmission Lines

2020 4th International Conference on HVDC (HVDC), 2020
With the development of HVDC transmission, half-bridge modular multilevel converter with hybrid HVDC circuit breakers becomes one of the mainstream configuration schemes in HVDC flexible system. However, the existing reclosing strategies have some defects, such as lack of selectivity and adoption of long time delay, due to the inability to determine ...

A protection system for long HVDC transmission lines

Proceedings of the Inaugural IEEE PES 2005 Conference and Exposition in Africa, 2006
A recent review of the currently used HVDC line protection systems clearly indicated that these systems were not adequately equipped to protect HVDC schemes with extremely long HVDC transmission lines. Therefore, considering the increase in HVDC transmission line lengths projected for the future HVDC schemes, it is of vital importance that some type of

Test Line Experience with HVDC Overhead Transmission

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1970
Tests were conducted on a high-voltage overhead direct-current test line. Values of radio interference and corona loss were established for certain conductor configurations and pole spacings. Relations between radio interference and corona loss and some weather variables were evaluated.

Electromagnetic interference due to HVDC transmission line faults

2012 China International Conference on Electricity Distribution, 2012
This paper presents a study of electromagnetic interference to pipelines due tonearby 500 kV HVDC transmission line faults. While there is a large volume of publications addressing the issues of alternating EMI issues, the authors are not aware of publicly available publications addressing the issues of inductive interference from HVDC lines under fault

Asymmetrical design of VSC-based HVDC transmission lines

2012 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2012
The advent of VSC-based overhead dc transmission allows reversal of power direction by reversing current flow rather than voltage polarity. This, in turn, allows the poles of HVdc line to be designed independently, taking advantage of polarity-based differences in insulation strength, radio and audible noise generation, and ground-level electric field ...
