Hybrid clones will appear within 2-3 wk after fusion (see Chapter 46). It is of utmost importance that a newly established hybridoma is cloned thoroughly to ensure that the cells growing in the tissue culture are of monoclonal origin and not a mixture of two or more hybridomas.

Hybridomas As a Source of Antibodies
Hospital Practice, 1981Hybridomas, the progeny of fusion between antibody-secreting spleen cells and myeloma cells, produce large quantities of a single species of antibody. They are an ideal source of serologic reagents since they can be grown in tissue culture, frozen, stored, and recovered when needed.

Just as this new facility symbolizes the vigor of the ATCC, so this conference symbolizes the communal interest that must be accorded the preservation and distribution of microorganisms and other cell lines. The ATCC and other repositories are not simply means to facilitate the sharing of cells of contemporary interest.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is developing, with the American Type Culture Collection, a central facility for the acquisition, maintenance, and distribution of hybridoma cell lines. This effort finds its principal justification in the great activity in this field and in the large variety of hybridoma lines that are produced

Hybridoma technology combines the unique qualities of antibody-producing B cells with immortalized myeloma cells, creating hybrid cells capable of endless proliferation while retaining the ability to produce specific antibodies. The process begins with the immunization of a host animal, typically a mouse, followed by the fusion of its spleen cells ...

Creating hybridomas by electrofusion
Nature, 1988Electromanipulation has long been used to form pores in cell membranes to transfect them with foreign DNA. Now, the technique has been extended to the preparation of hybridomas.
