Effects of dexamethasone and hydrocortisone on rocuroniuminduced neuromuscular blockade and reversal by sugammadex in phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm rat model [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology, 2019
Background The facilitator effects of steroids on neuromuscular transmission may cause resistance to neuromuscular blocking agents. Additionally, steroids may hinder sugammadex reversal of neuromuscular blockade, but these findings remain controversial ...

A randomized clinical trial on inhaled ciclesonide for managing acute asthma in the emergency room

open access: yesSão Paulo Medical Journal, 2022
BACKGROUND: Use of inhaled corticosteroids for managing acute asthma exacerbations has been tested since the 1990s. OBJECTIVE: To compare high doses of inhaled ciclesonide with systemic hydrocortisone for managing acute asthma exacerbations in the ...

Patient and caregiver experiences with hydrocortisone injections in adrenal crisis: a mixed-methods cross-sectional study

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundAdrenal crisis is the leading cause of death in patients with adrenal insufficiency, and prevention requires immediate parenteral hydrocortisone administration. However, most patients do not receive their home emergency hydrocortisone injection.

Pulmonary Effects of Neonatal Hydrocortisone Treatment in Ventilator-Dependent Preterm Infants

open access: yesInternational Journal of Pediatrics, 2011
Background/Objective. Hydrocortisone, administered to ventilated preterm neonates to facilitate extubation, has no adverse long-term effects, but short-term pulmonary effects have not been described previously.

Pharmacokinetic Modeling of Hydrocortisone by Including Protein Binding to Corticosteroid-Binding Globulin

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2022
Background: Patients with adrenal insufficiency are treated with oral hydrocortisone (HC) to compensate for the loss of endogenous cortisol production. Intrinsic imperfections of cortisol replacement strategies in mimicking normal cortisol secretion are ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Accelerated forgetting of a trauma-like event in healthy men and women after a single dose of hydrocortisone

open access: yesTranslational Psychiatry, 2022
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by dysregulated hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and altered glucocorticoid receptor sensitivity.

The role and implications of mammalian cellular circadian entrainment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
At their most fundamental level, mammalian circadian rhythms occur inside every individual cell. To tell the correct time, cells must align (or ‘entrain’) their circadian rhythm to the external environment. In this review, we highlight how cells entrain to the major circadian cues of light, feeding and temperature, and the implications this has for our

YAP1::TFE3 mediates endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal plasticity in epithelioid hemangioendothelioma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The YAP1::TFE3 fusion protein drives endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EndMT) plasticity, resulting in the loss of endothelial characteristics and gain of mesenchymal‐like properties, including resistance to anoikis, increased migratory capacity, and loss of contact growth inhibition in endothelial cells.

Molecular characterisation of human penile carcinoma and generation of paired epithelial primary cell lines

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Generation of two normal and tumour (cancerous) paired human cell lines using an established tissue culture technique and their characterisation is described. Cell lines were characterised at cellular, protein, chromosome and gene expression levels and for HPV status.
