Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

Unsteady Hydrodynamic Analysis and Experimental Methodology for Voith Schneider Propeller

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) operates with blades undergoing an approximately sinusoidal periodic motion along a circular path. Hydrodynamically, the continuous significant variation in the angle of attack between the blades and incoming flow ...

Modeling the Impact of Baryons on Subhalo Populations with Machine Learning [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We identify subhalos in dark matter-only (DMO) zoom-in simulations that are likely to be disrupted due to baryonic effects by using a random forest classifier trained on two hydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way (MW)-mass host halos from the Latte suite ...

Hydrodynamic limit for the velocity-flip model [PDF]

open access: yesStochastic Processes and their Applications, 2013
We study the diffusive scaling limit for a chain of $N$ coupled oscillators. In order to provide the system with good ergodic properties, we perturb the Hamiltonian dynamics with random flips of velocities, so that the energy is locally conserved.

NanoMOF‐Based Multilevel Anti‐Counterfeiting by a Combination of Visible and Invisible Photoluminescence and Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents novel anti‐counterfeiting tags with multilevel security features that utilize additional disguise features. They combine luminescent nanosized Ln‐MOFs with conductive polymers to multifunctional mixed‐matrix membranes and powder composites. The materials exhibit visible/NIR emission and matrix‐based conductivity even as black bodies.

Biodegradable and Recyclable Luminescent Mixed‐Matrix‐Membranes, Hydrogels, and Cryogels based on Nanoscale Metal‐Organic Frameworks and Biopolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Design and Implementation of an Underwater Cleaning System for Ship Maintenance via a Robotic Arm

open access: yesApplied Sciences
To better address the operational requirements for emergency underwater ship maintenance, this study proposes the use of an underwater robotic arm instead of divers for cleaning submerged hull sections. Experimental analyses are conducted to validate the

From non-symmetric particle systems to non-linear PDEs on fractals

open access: yes, 2017
We present new results and challenges in obtaining hydrodynamic limits for non-symmetric (weakly asymmetric) particle systems (exclusion processes on pre-fractal graphs) converging to a non-linear heat equation.

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...
