A Biologically‐Architected Wear and Damage‐Resistant Nanoparticle Coating From the Radular Teeth of Cryptochiton stelleri

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The ultrahard teeth of mollusks that feed on rocky substrates contain a wear‐resistant coating on their surfaces consisting of densely packed mesocrystalline magnetic nanoparticles within an organic matrix. These coatings display significant hardness and toughness through their highly controlled mesocrystalline architectures.

Bio‐Inspired Nanoarchitected LiFePO4 Cathodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is synthesized using a bio‐inspired method, using acidic macromolecules similar to those found in many calcareous mineralized organisms to modulate the morphology and crystal growth of LFP‐carbon composite particles. The observations from this process indicate a non‐classical crystallization process, which subsequently ...

Painful Os Peroneum Syndrome Secondary to Hydroxyapatite Deposition Disease

open access: yesIndian Journal of Radiology and Imaging
Painful os peroneum syndrome (POPS) is one of the uncommon causes of lateral foot pain in orthopaedic practice. POPS encompasses a spectrum of pathologies such as an acute or a chronic fracture, peroneus longus tenosynovitis, and attrition or partial ...

A novel self-assembled oligopeptide amphiphile for biomimetic mineralization of enamel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background Researchers are looking for biomimetic mineralization of ena/mel to manage dental erosion. This study evaluated biomimetic mineralization of demineralized enamel induced by a synthetic and self-assembled oligopeptide amphiphile (OPA ...

Structural Porosity and Low Mineral Density in Enamel Rods Drive Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study uses advanced imaging modalities on multiple length scales to show that molar‐incisor hypomineralization does not present as a locally homogeneous pathology. Instead, microstructural defects, characterized through non‐mineralized, protein‐rich sheaths and an altered mineral structure in between prism rods, resulting in local differences in ...

The Efficacy of Remineralizing Materials on Artificial Enamel Lesions: An In Vitro Study

open access: yesMedicina
Background and Objectives: Contemporary caries treatment seeks to preserve hard dental tissues as well as to promote lesion remineralization and biological tissue regeneration. While fluoride-based treatments remain the gold standard, their effectiveness

Attachment and Proliferation of Osteoblasts on Lithium-Hydroxyapatite Composites

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2012
The biocompatibility and bioactivity properties of hydroxyapatites (HAs) modified through lithium addition were investigated. Hydroxyapatites obtained from bovine bone were mixed with lithium carbonate (Li), in the proportions of 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, and 2 ...

Bioceramic nanocomposite thiol-acrylate polyHIPE scaffolds for enhanced osteoblastic cell culture in 3D [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Emulsion-templated (polyHIPE) scaffolds for bone tissue engineering were produced by photopolymerisation of a mixture of trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) and dipentaerythritol penta-/hexa-acrylate in the presence of hydroxyapatite (HA) or ...
