Hyperketonemia Predictions Provide an On-Farm Management Tool with Epidemiological Insights [PDF]
Prediction of hyperketonemia (HYK), a postpartum metabolic disorder in dairy cows, through use of cow and milk data has allowed for high-throughput detection and monitoring during monthly milk sampling.

Hyperketonemia and the impairment of udder defense: a review [PDF]
The objective of this study was to review the possible relationships between hyperketonemia and the function of phagocytes with respect to the bovine udder defense mechanism. We hypothesize that an increased incidence of clinical mastitis in high-producing cows is caused by the impairment of the udder defense mechanism during hyperketonemia.

The study of hyperketonemia in the dairy cow.
The metabolic phenomenon of ketosis in dairy cows has remained ambiguous, casting uncertainty over our understanding and its real implications. Ketosis, commonly defined as blood β-hydroxy-butyrate (BHB) ≥ 1.2 mM (i.e., hyperketonemia), has been observationally connected to the onset of peripartal metabolic disorders (e.g., infectious diseases, fatty ...

Detection of hyperketonemia in dairy cows
Over the past years, hyperketonemia has been shown to be associated with health and production of postpartum dairy cows. Many tests are available to detect hyperketonemia in blood, urine, and milk. A procedure that quantifies ketone bodies in milk is now available through the dairy herd improvement association (DHIA) sampling process; however ...

Identification of genetic markers associated with hyperketonemia patterns in early lactation Holstein cows [PDF]
Abstract Ketosis, evidenced by hyperketonemia with elevated blood β‐hydroxybutyrate (BHB) levels, is a significant metabolic disorder of dairy cattle, typically diagnosed within the first 6 weeks post‐calving when high energy levels are essential to milk production.

Background/Aims: The incidence of developing microvascular dysfunction is significantly higher in type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients. Hyperketonemia (acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate) is frequently found along with hyperglycemia in T1D. Whether hyperketonemia

: The objective of this prospective cohort study was to characterize the metabolic profile, health, milk production, and reproductive outcomes of cows diagnosed with hyperketonemia (HK; β-hydroxybutyrate ≥1.2 mmol/L), hypoglycemia (HG; glucose ≤2.2 mmol ...

Multiparametric analysis of blood parameters and hyperketonemia in cows [PDF]
The aim of this study is to examine the interrelationships and importance of biochemical and endocrine blood parameters in the assessment of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) values in healthy and ketotic cows using multiparameter statistics. The experiment included 45 Holstein Friesian cows (22 healthy and 23 with ketosis).

Hyperketonemia is common in cows postpartum and is associated with a decrease in milk production, reproductive efficiency, and increased risk of periparturient diseases and early culling from the herd.

Elevating blood ketones may enhance exercise capacity and modulate adaptations to exercise training; however, these effects may depend on whether hyperketonemia is induced endogenously through dietary carbohydrate restriction, or exogenously through ...
