ABC of hypertension: The pathophysiology of hypertension

open access: yesBMJ, 2001
There is still much uncertainty about the pathophysiology of hypertension. A small number of patients (between 2% and 5%) have an underlying renal or adrenal disease as the cause for their raised blood pressure. In the remainder, however, no clear single identifiable cause is found and their condition is labelled “essential hypertension”.

The Childhood Role in Development of Primary Hypertension. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Primary hypertension is not just an adult disorder. Current US population data on children and adolescents demonstrate a prevalence of elevated blood pressure (BP) and hypertension combined of over 10%.

Residues R177 and S178 of the human Na+/H+ antiporter NHA2 are involved in its inhibition by the flavonoid phloretin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 6, Page 901-911, March 2025.
The human Na+/H+ antiporter NHA2 transports Na+ or Li+ in exchange for protons across cell membranes, and its dysfunction results in various pathologies, e.g., fertility disorders, hypertension, or diabetes. This work provides the molecular characterization of interactions of NHA2 with its specific inhibitor phloretin, which can be helpful for the ...

Sources of dietary protein and risk of hypertension in a general Dutch population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Evidence suggests a small beneficial effect of dietary protein on blood pressure (BP), especially for plant protein. We examined the relationship between several types of dietary protein (total, plant, animal, dairy, meat and grain) and the risk of ...

STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.
