Summary: The importance of hypertext has been steadily growing over the past decade. The Internet and other information systems use hypertext format, with data organized associatively rather than sequentially or relationally. A myriad of textual problems have been considered in the pattern matching field with many nontrivial results.

A THEORETICAL DESCRIPTION OF HYPERTEXT is provided and three applications of hypertext: Electronic Studying, Literary Exploration, and Qualitative Research are discussed. Hypertext is defined as a form of writing with three characteristics: discernable free standing content nodes, links between nodes, and the expectation of active choice by readers ...

In 1968, Doug Englebart and his team at the Stanford Research Institute amazed the world with their oN-Line System (NLS), giving what has since been dubbed the "Mother of all Demos." The NLS system, later renamed Augment, was the first Graphical User Interface, the first Word Processor, the first Wiki, the first Hypertext system, essentially the first ...

Hypertext '87 was the first large-scale meeting devoted to the hypertext concept. Before the workshop, hypertext had been considered a somewhat esoteric concept of interest to a few fanatics only. So just in case some readers don't know what hypertext is, let me start by defining it.

Over the past couple decades, as the term "hypertext" has gained a certain popular currency, a question has been raised repeatedly: "What is hypertext?" Our most respected scholars offer a range of different, at times incompatible, answers. This paper argues that our best response to this situation is to adopt the approach taken with other terms that ...

Computer-aided software engineering (CASE) systems require a database system that must let designers logically associate documentation and source code, make annotations to record explanations and assumptions, and manage different versions of the software.

The discussion about the future of hypertext made me wonder whether I could find another reason to consider a text to be 'hyper'. The answer I found may not be that interesting itself, but the discussions about it gave me some ideas which I want to present in the context of my project. The object of this project is to come to a better understanding of ...

Annals and chronicles may be the foundation of accounting, but writers of stories and histories have long known that they seldom render a satisfactory account of complex events. In place of a simple chronological list, narrative instead organizes our account in new sequences in order to illuminate the interplay of actors and events.

Proceedings of the thirteenth ACM conference on Hypertext and hypermedia - HYPERTEXT '02, 2000
Hypertext interfaces typically involve navigation, the act (and interaction) of moving from one piece of information to another. Navigation can be exploratory, or it may involve backtracking to some previously-visited node. While backtracking interfaces are common, they may not reflect differences in readers' purposes and mental models.
