Progress Toward a Portable Artificial Lung: A Systematic Review

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Eight portable respiratory assist devices were identified. The CE‐marked MobyBox and the FDA‐approved Breethe OXY‐1 system are in clinical use. Each device is substantially minimized to allow ambulation, but further work is required to address challenges related to anticoagulant management and safe mobilization. Created in BioRender. Hypothermic Oxygenated Perfusion (HOPE) downregulates the immune response in a rat model of liver transplantation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of a novel oxygenated perfusion approach on rejection after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). BACKGROUND: Hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE) was designed to prevent graft failure after OLT.

Hypothermic Oxygenated Machine Perfusion in Donor Hearts

open access: yes
Heart transplantation remains the definitive treatment for end-stage heart diseases. The rising demand for heart transplants underscores the need to expand the donor pool by using marginal and long-distant donors with the potential of increasing the rate of primary graft dysfunction.

The Anti‐Inflammatory Effect of Normothermic Machine Perfused Human Kidneys on Monocyte‐Derived Dendritic Cells

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
The immunogenicity of donor kidneys on NMP can be studied using monocyte‐derived dendritic cells. Incubation with perfusate showed an anti‐inflammatory dendritic cell phenotype and function that suggests the release of an anti‐inflammatory factor or factors during NMP. ABSTRACT Background The immunomodulatory activity of normothermic machine perfusion (

Nationwide Hypothermic Machine Perfusion for ECD and DCD Kidney Transplantation in Belgium: One-Year Outcomes and Impact on Transplant Rates and Budget Impact Analysis

open access: yesTransplant International
In September 2022, Belgium implemented a nationally reimbursed HMP service for all ECD and DCD kidneys procured and transplanted within the country. We retrospectively analyzed data from 242 kidney transplantations preserved with continuous HMP between ...

Heart Donation After Controlled Circulatory Death in Noncardiac Surgery Hospitals With a Mobile Heart Team: A Case Series From an Italian Regional Program and Integrated Review of the Literature

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
In this series of 19 DCD donors using TA‐NRP, 89.5% of hearts were successfully transplanted with no PGD, no postoperative ECMO, and no 30‐day mortality, demonstrating the feasibility and safety of this approach. ABSTRACT Controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) with thoracoabdominal normothermic regional perfusion (TA‐NRP) has emerged ...

Impact of Respiratory Support Strategies on CO2 Variability During Therapeutic Hypothermia in Neonates With Asphyxia: Data From the German Hypothermia Registry

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim To evaluate associations between respiratory support strategies, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) variability and oxygen exposure in neonates with hypoxic–ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) undergoing therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Methods This retrospective multicentre study used data from the German Hypothermia Registry, including ...

Hypothermic Oxygenated Perfusion To Reduce Tumour Recurrence After Liver Transplantation In Patients With Hepatocarcinoma

open access: yes, 2022
Hypothermic oxygenated ex-situ machine perfusion (HOPE) is a dynamic preservation method that has been developed to reduce the incidence and severity of ischaemia-reperfusion injury and to improve outcomes after liver transplantation.

Transplantation of high-risk donor livers after resuscitation and viability assessment using a combined protocol of oxygenated hypothermic, rewarming and normothermic machine perfusion: study protocol for a prospective, single-arm study (DHOPE-COR-NMP trial)

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2019
Introduction Extended criteria donor (ECD) livers are increasingly accepted for transplantation in an attempt to reduce the gap between the number of patients on the waiting list and the available number of donor livers.
