Hypoxia sustains glioblastoma radioresistance through ERKs/DNA-PKcs/HIF-1α functional interplay [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The molecular mechanisms by which glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) refracts and becomes resistant to radiotherapy treatment remains largely unknown. This radioresistance is partly due to the presence of hypoxic regions, which are frequently found in GBM ...

Novel Biologically Active Glass Fiber Functionalized Using Magnesium Phosphate Cement Promotes Bone and Vascular Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
In this study, a new type of bioactive glass fiber ‐based composite magnesium phosphate bone cement is prepared and verified that its mechanical strength and biological properties. In addition, the cement may have played a biologically active role in the Notch and HIF signaling pathways.

Defining the role of oxygen tension in human neural progenitor fate. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Hypoxia augments human embryonic stem cell (hESC) self-renewal via hypoxia-inducible factor 2α-activated OCT4 transcription. Hypoxia also increases the efficiency of reprogramming differentiated cells to a pluripotent-like state. Combined, these findings

The Regulation of Trace Metal Elements in Cancer Ferroptosis

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The induction of ferroptosis inhibits tumor growth, enhances anticancer efficacy, and overcomes drug resistance. Recent evidence shows nonferrous metal elements play a role in ferroptosis. This review focuses on how trace metals regulate ferroptosis processes like iron accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells‐Derived Extracellular Vesicles Mimetics as Osteoinductive Mediators for Bone Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mesenchymal stem cell‐derived nanoghosts (MSC‐NGs) mimic naturally secreted extracellular vesicles (MSC‐EVs) in structure and physicochemical properties but can be synthesized at more translatable yields. As osteogenic agents, MSC‐NGs demonstrate superior outcomes compared to MSC‐EVs.

Hypoxia-inducible factors and RAB22A mediate formation of microvesicles that stimulate breast cancer invasion and metastasis

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2014
Significance Cancer cells release from their cell surface membrane-lined microvesicles (MVs), which contain proteins, mRNAs, and microRNAs that can be taken up by other cells.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

Activation of hypoxia-inducible factors prevents diabetic nephropathy.

open access: yesJournal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2015
Hyperglycemia results in increased oxygen consumption and decreased oxygen tension in the kidney. We tested the hypothesis that activation of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) protects against diabetes-induced alterations in oxygen metabolism and kidney ...

H2O2‐Generating Advanced Nanomaterials for Cancer Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
H2O2‐generating nanoplatforms can exploit tumor redox imbalance for O2 and toxic reactive oxygen species generation, leading to hypoxia reversal, and apoptosis of cancer cells, respectively. This review highlights the mechanisms of these nanoplatforms, including exogenous H₂O₂ delivery, endogenous amplification, and metal peroxides, which leads to ...

Hypoxia, Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1α, and Innate Antileishmanial Immune Responses

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2018
Low oxygen environments and accumulation of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are features of infected and inflamed tissues. Here, we summarize our current knowledge on oxygen levels found in Leishmania-infected tissues and discuss which mechanisms ...
