Abstract In this paper, the transverse dynamic hysteretic damping characteristics (HDC) of a serpentine belt are investigated. The variable stiffness and variable damping model (VSDM) constituted of a variable-stiffness spring and a variable-damping damper is developed to estimate the HDC of the belt.

Suggestion of MSTV (Modified-Stick-Transition-Velocity) model for hysteretic damping mechanism
Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2008To decrease vibration and noise in washing machines, lubricated friction dampers were installed. Although the structure of the friction damper is simple, it was not easy to develop a mathematical model for the dynamic behavior of the lubrication damper.

Hysteretic damping is commonly accepted to be reasonably accurate in some circumstances, but can only be applied directly in the frequency domain. Dynamic (time) behaviour, however, is most conveniently predicted by a viscous model.
