Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

DETAILED VALIDATION OF AMSR2 SEA ICE CONCENTRATION DATA USING MODIS DATA IN THE SEA OF OKHOTSK [PDF]

open access: yesISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2020
Global warming is one of the most serious problems we are facing in the 21st Century. Sea ice has an important role of reflecting the solar radiation back into space.

Estimation of sea ice parameters from sea ice model with assimilated ice concentration and SST [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2018
Abstract. A multi-category numerical sea ice model CICE along with data assimilation was used to derive sea ice parameters in the region of Baffin Bay and Labrador Sea. The assimilation of ice concentration was performed using the data derived from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E & AMSR2).

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Brief communication: The challenge and benefit of using sea ice concentration satellite data products with uncertainty estimates in summer sea ice data assimilation [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2016
Data assimilation experiments that aim at improving summer ice concentration and thickness forecasts in the Arctic are carried out. The data assimilation system used is based on the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) and a local singular evolutive ...

Investigation of North Pacific sea ice anomalies in the context of atmospheric and oceanic variability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2001This study investigates the main mode of variability in North Pacific sea ice and examines the relationship between sea ice concentration and northern hemispheric climate variability for the period 1968 ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Numerical simulation of ice loads on a ship in broken ice fields using an elastic ice model

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2020
The finite element method is used to simulate the navigation of an ice-area bulk carrier in broken ice fields. The ice material is defined as elastic, and the simulations are accomplished at four model speeds and three ice concentrations.

The impact of melt ponds on summertime microwave brightness temperatures and sea-ice concentrations [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2016
Sea-ice concentrations derived from satellite microwave brightness temperatures are less accurate during summer. In the Arctic Ocean the lack of accuracy is primarily caused by melt ponds, but also by changes in the properties of snow and the sea-ice ...

Simulating ice core 10Be on the glacial–interglacial timescale [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
10Be ice core measurements are an important tool for paleoclimate research, e.g., allowing for the reconstruction of past solar activity or changes in the geomagnetic dipole field.
