Thermodynamic effect dictates influence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation on Eurasia winter temperature

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) has garnered attention for its important role in shaping surface air temperature (SAT) patterns over Eurasia.

Dynamics of Topological Excitations in a Model Quantum Spin Ice

open access: yes, 2018
We study the quantum spin dynamics of a frustrated XXZ model on a pyrochlore lattice by using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation and stochastic analytic continuation.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Environmental record of layers of bubbles in natural pond ice

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2018
Autonomous temperature data loggers were used to measure the temperature profile within a growing ice cover and in the water below. The ice formed under natural conditions over the pond.

Antarctic food web architecture under varying dynamics of sea ice cover

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
In the Ross Sea, biodiversity organisation is strongly influenced by sea-ice cover, which is characterised by marked spatio-temporal variations. Expected changes in seasonal sea-ice dynamics will be reflected in food web architecture, providing a unique ...

Effective viscosity of grease ice in linearized gravity waves

open access: yes, 2004
Grease ice is an agglomeration of disc-shaped ice crystals, named frazil ice, which forms in turbulent waters of the Polar Oceans and in rivers as well.

Pre‐analytical optimization of cell‐free DNA and extracellular vesicle‐derived DNA for mutation detection in liquid biopsies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical handling critically determines liquid biopsy performance. This study defines practical best‐practice conditions for cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) and extracellular vesicle–derived DNA (evDNA), showing how processing time, storage conditions, tube type, and plasma input volume affect DNA integrity and mutation detection.

The significant influence of the Atlantic multidecadal variability to the abrupt warming in Northeast Asia in the 1990s

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Northeast Asia experienced unprecedented abrupt warming in the 1990s since the last century. Based on a robust time series and rank frequency evaluation, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Grand Ensembles of CMIP5 (MPI-GE5), CMIP6 (MPI-GE6), EC ...

Dynamic quantum kagome ice

open access: yes, 2017
The search for two dimensional quantum spin liquids, exotic magnetic states with an entangled ground state remaining disordered down to zero temperature, has been a great challenge in frustrated magnetism during the last decades. Recently, fractionalized excitations, called spinons, emerging from these states, have been evidenced in kagome and ...

Results of the US contribution to the joint US/USSR Bering Sea experiment [PDF]

open access: yes
The atmospheric circulation which occurred during the Bering Sea Experiment, 15 February to 10 March 1973, in and around the experiment area is analyzed and related to the macroscale morphology and dynamics of the sea ice cover.
