An enthalpy-based model for the physics of ice-crystal icing

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics
Ice-crystal icing (ICI) in aircraft engines is a major threat to flight safety. Due to the complex thermodynamic and phase-change conditions involved in ICI, rigorous modelling of the accretion process remains limited. The present study proposes a novel modelling approach based on the physically observed mixed-phase nature of the accretion layers.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

The key physics of ice premelting

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics
A disordered quasi-liquid layer of water is thought to cover the ice surface, but many issues, such as its onset temperature, its thickness, or its actual relation to bulk liquid water, have been a matter of unsettled controversy for more than a century.

II. On some physical properties of ice [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London
Abstract In this paper the following points are considered:-— 1. The effects of radiant heat upon ice. 2. The effects of conducted heat upon ice. 3. The air- and water-cavities of ice. 4. The effects of pressure upon ice.

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Improving the spatial distribution of modeled Arctic sea ice thickness

open access: yes, 2005
The spatial distribution of ice thickness/draft in the Arctic Ocean is examined using a sea ice model. A comparison of model predictions with submarine observations of sea ice draft made during cruises between 1987 and 1997 reveals that the model has the

Recent trends in melting conditions on the Antarctic Peninsula and their implications for ice-sheet mass balance and sea level [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Long-term records from meteorological stations on the Antarctic Peninsula show strong rising trends in the annual duration of melting conditions. In each case, the trend is statistically significant and represents a major increase in the potential for ...

The Role of Calcitonin Gene‐Related Peptide in High‐Altitude Headache: A Prospective Field Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective High‐altitude headache (HAH) is a common neurological condition associated with rapid ascent to high altitude. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying HAH remain incompletely understood. Calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP), a neuropeptide implicated in migraine pathophysiology, may play a key role in the pathophysiology of ...

Switch-off of a major enhanced ice flow unit in East Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) is the largest reservoir of ice on the planet by an order of magnitude. Compared with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), it is traditionally considered to be relatively stable, with only minor adjustments to its ...

Plasma EV Proteomics Identifies ECM Remodeling and Inflammatory Proteins LUM and C7 as Candidate Biomarkers in FSHD

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most debilitating and common muscular dystrophies. Despite its severity, no approved therapy exists for FSHD patients. However, several therapeutic candidates are currently under development, and some have recently entered clinical trials, marking the need for reliable ...
