Pteropods as early‐warning indicators of ocean acidification

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, EarlyView.
Abstract Aragonite undersaturation (Ωar$$ {\Omega}_{\mathrm{ar}} $$ <$$ < $$ 1) events are projected to rapidly increase in frequency and duration in the Antarctic Weddell Sea by 2050. Thecosome pteropods (pelagic snails) are bioindicators of ocean acidification (OA) because their aragonite shell dissolves easily at low Ωar$$ {\Omega}_{\mathrm{ar ...

Melting and freezing under Antarctic ice shelves from a combination of ice-sheet modelling and observations

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2017
Ice-shelf basal melting is the largest contributor to the negative mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet. However, current implementations of ice/ocean interactions in ice-sheet models disagree with the distribution of sub-shelf melt and freezing rates

Gag Gifting: The Joke and the Poke

open access: yesPsychology &Marketing, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gag gifting is a ritual involving a gift along with a joke at the expense of the recipient (i.e., a “poke”). This study shows that gag gifting occurs frequently, at various occasions. Findings from a qualitative study illustrate the way gag gifts are purchased or handmade into unique or personalized items.

Paving the Way for Improved Representation of Coupled Physical and Biogeochemical Processes in Arctic River Plumes—A Case Study of the Mackenzie Shelf

open access: yesPermafrost and Periglacial Processes, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Processes affecting the transformation of riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) across the land‐to‐ocean aquatic continuum are still poorly constrained in Arctic models, leading to large uncertainties in simulated air–sea CO2 fluxes of the coastal periphery.

Seasonal and diurnal variability of sub-ice platelet layer thickness in McMurdo Sound from electromagnetic induction sounding [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Here, we present observations of temporal variability of sub-ice platelet layer over seasonal and diurnal timescales under Ice Shelf Water-influenced fast ice in McMurdo Sound.

Parameter sensitivity analysis of dynamic ice sheet models [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
The velocity field and the height at the surface of a dynamic ice sheet are observed. The ice sheets are modeled by the full Stokes equations and shallow shelf/shelfy stream approximations. Time dependence is introduced by a kinematic free surface equation which updates the surface elevation using the velocity solution.

Stability of the Junction of an Ice Sheet and an Ice Shelf [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 1974
An analysis is made of the steady-state size of a two-dimensional ice sheet whose base is below sea-level and which terminates in floating ice shelves. Under the assumption of perfect plasticity it is found that an ice sheet placed on a bed whose surface was initially flat cannot exist if the depth of the bed below sea-level exceeds a critical depth ...

Spatial and temporal structure of the fog life cycle over Atlantic Canada and the Grand Banks

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The relationship between fog occurrence and atmospheric and ocean surface conditions is explored from a 71‐year climatological analysis covering a broad range of spatial and temporal scales of marine fog over Atlantic Canada and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada. We find that the ocean surface plays a key role as a necessary boundary condition in
