Impurity Analysis and Microstructure Along the Climatic Transition From MIS 6 Into 5e in the EDML Ice Core Using Cryo-Raman Microscopy

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2019
Impurities in polar ice cores have been studied so far mainly for the purpose of reconstructions of past atmospheric aerosol concentrations. However, impurities also critically influence physical properties of the ice matrix itself.

Disorder Analysis in Infrared Spectroscopy of Acetylene Ice

open access: yesThe Journal of Physical Chemistry A
A new method to investigate disorder in ice films is proposed and applied to acetylene ice. It is based on a quantitative analysis of the infrared spectrum data, which includes: the Brendel-Bormann model for the material's dielectric function; molecular vibration modes calculated by density functional theory (DFT); a monomer-dimer model for amorphous ...

Time‐restricted feeding prior to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection reduces tissue CD4+ T cells with limited impact on bacterial clearance

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐restricted feeding (TRF) in mice increased liver fatty acid oxidation and decreased fatty acid biosynthesis. These alterations persisted when TRF was discontinued and the host was infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Pre‐exposure to TRF did not alter tissue (lung and spleen) mycobacterial burden but significantly reduced CD3+ T cells in lungs

Detection of Aerobic Bacterial Endospores: From Air Sampling, Sterilization Validation to Astrobiology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Bacterial endospores are formed in genera such as Bacillus and Clostridium in times of incipient stresses. Derivative of their remarkable resistance and ubiquity, endospores are delivery vehicles for anthrax attack, biological indicators for checking ...

Absorption Coefficients of Condensed O2: Application to Ganymede

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
Two absorption features in the visible reflectance spectra of the icy Galilean satellites are associated with dense phase molecular oxygen (O _2 ). These were identified from ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope data on Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto.

A Continuous Cryosphere Index for Snow and Ice Reflectance

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Because of high visible and near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance, and deep shortwave infrared (SWIR) absorption, snow and ice are unique among terrestrial land cover.

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Plasma EV Proteomics Identifies ECM Remodeling and Inflammatory Proteins LUM and C7 as Candidate Biomarkers in FSHD

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is one of the most debilitating and common muscular dystrophies. Despite its severity, no approved therapy exists for FSHD patients. However, several therapeutic candidates are currently under development, and some have recently entered clinical trials, marking the need for reliable ...

Photolysis and Sublimation Chemistry of Ammonium Cyanide with Relevance to Cometary Environments

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
Bulk nitrogen is depleted in solar system objects, including the terrestrial planets, chondritic meteorites, and comets. Recently, it was suggested that cometary nitrogen may be locked up in ammonium salts—ionic solids comprising ammonia (NH _3 ) and an ...
