The relation between sea ice thickness and freeboard in the Arctic [PDF]
Retrieval of Arctic sea ice thickness from CryoSat-2 radar altimeter freeboard data requires observational data to verify the relation between these two variables.

Ice thickness measurements by Raman scattering [PDF]
A compact Raman LIDAR system with a spectrograph was used for express ice thickness measurements. The difference between the Raman spectra of ice and liquid water is employed to locate the ice-water interface while elastic scattering was used for air-ice surface detection.

Estimation of the age of ice hummocks in the freezing seas
A method of estimating the ice ridge age proposed in the 1990s was analyzed and some disadvantages of this method were shown. Analysis of the ice thickness distribution in the ice ridges demonstrated that in many cases the average value of the thickness ...

Temporal Variations in Ice Thickness of the Shirase Glacier Derived from Cryosat-2/SIRAL Data
This study presents the feasibility of estimating the ice thickness of the Shirase Glacier using the synthetic aperture interferometric radar altimeter (SIRAL) on board the CryoSat-2 and the interannual variation of the ice thickness of the Shirase ...

River ice responses to a warming Arctic—recent evidence from Russian rivers [PDF]
This paper looks at the response of river ice to recent warming in the Arctic at six major downstream gauges on large Russian rivers flowing to the Arctic Ocean.

The Antarctic sea ice cover from ICESat-2 and CryoSat-2: freeboard, snow depth, and ice thickness
. We offer a view of the Antarctic sea ice cover from lidar (ICESat-2) and radar (CryoSat-2) altimetry, with retrievals of freeboard, snow depth, and ice thickness that span an 8-month winter between 1 April and 16 November 2019.

Ice thickness determination with audio sound. [PDF]
The objective of this study is to determine the thickness of Ice by analyzing the sound spectrum generated by dispersion of lamb waves propagating in ice. In winters when the lakes and rivers freeze, it is important to know the thickness of the ice layer before one intends to walk on it.

'Calving laws', 'sliding laws' and the stability of tidewater glaciers [PDF]
A new calving criterion is introduced, which predicts calving where the depth of surface crevasses equals ice height above sea level. Crevasse depth is calculated from strain rates, and terminus position and calving rate are therefore functions of ice ...

Impact assessment of snow thickness, sea ice density and water density in CryoSat-2-derived sea ice thickness [PDF]
Sea ice thickness is an essential climate variable, which is often derived from satellite altimetry freeboard estimates, e.g., by CryoSat-2. In order to convert freeboard to sea ice thickness, assumptions are needed for snow thickness, snow density, sea ...

Sea Ice Thickness in the Western Ross Sea
Using airborne measurements, we provide a first direct glimpse of the sea ice thickness distribution in the western Ross Sea, Antarctica, where the distinguishing sea ice process is the regular occurrence of the Ross Sea, McMurdo Sound, and Terra Nova ...
