Adaptive significance of venom glands in the tadpole madtom Noturus gyrinus (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae)

Journal of Experimental Biology, 2012
Piscine venom glands have implicitly been assumed to be anti-predatory adaptations, but direct examinations of the potential fitness benefits provided by these structures are relatively sparse. In previous experiments examining this question, alternative phenotypes have not been presented to ecologically relevant predators, and the results are thus ...

Alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase in neutrophils of the catfish Ictalurus melas (Rafinesque) (Siluriformes Ictaluridae)

Histochemistry, 1981
Alkaline phosphatase and peroxidase activities were investigated in typical neutrophils and in vacuolated cells, the latter considered to be another type of neutrophil in catfish blood. This study was carried out by light- and electron-microscopy. Two lines of neutrophils were recognized in the peripheral blood of catfish. Alkaline phosphatase activity

Parental care sex differences in the brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus (Pisces, Ictaluridae)

Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 1986
Males were the principal care-givers in the brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus. Direct observations on individually tagged adults in nature revealed that males attended broods at closer distances than females and were the most frequent lone care-givers.

Pancreatic islet cytology of ictaluridae (Teleostei)

Cell and Tissue Research, 1975
The endocrine pancreas of the bullhead catfish, Ictalurus nebulosus, and the channel catfish, I. punctatas was studied by light and electron microscopy. In addition to the usual A, B and D cells, a fourth endocrine cell type was consistently observed in the electron microscope. All endocrine cell types were innervated. The vesicles of most of the nerve
