The Primary Immunodeficiencies
New England Journal of Medicine, 1984The primary immunodeficiency disorders reflect abnormalities in the development and maturation of cells of the immune system. These defects result in an increased susceptibility to infection; recurrent pyogenic infections occur with defects of humoral immunity, and opportunistic infections with defects of cell-mediated immunity.

ANTIBIOTICS AND IMMUNODEFICIENCY
The Lancet, 1972Abstract Immunological-deficiency syndromes were not observed before 1952. A possible explanation is that some of these conditions are produced by administration of antibiotics to certain individuals at a critical point in the development of immune responses.

Drugs & Aging, 1997
Aging is associated with declines in multiple areas of immune function, but to date no single mechanism has emerged as being responsible for all the observed changes. Many changes occur at different rates within individuals as well as between individuals. With advancing age there is a concomitant increase in the incidence of many infections and cancers.

Autoimmunity and immunodeficiency
Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 2020Purpose of reviewAdvances in genomics and animal models of human disease have enabled the discovery of mechanisms important for host immunity and self-tolerance. Here, we summarize conceptual and clinical discoveries identified from 2018 to 2019 in the field of primary immunodeficiencies and autoimmunity.Recent findingsThree new primary ...

Immunodeficiency of the Elderly
Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1987The elderly are at risk for an increased incidence and severity of certain infections. The contribution of age-related immunologic impairment to the pathogenesis of these infections has been difficult to determine because of a number of confounding variables associated with aging.

Arthritis and immunodeficiency
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1972Summary A single case of chronic polyarthritis has been observed among 35 immunodeficient patients. Six additional patients have had transient arthritis or arthralgia, and two have had other musculoskeletal problems. This observation is not in accord with the high prevalence of chronic arthritis previously reported among immunodeficient patients. The

Immunodeficiency is caused by failure of a component of the immune system and results in increased susceptibility to infections. The possibility that a patient has an underlying immunodeficiency should be considered in the following circumstances: (1) serious, persistent, unusual or recurrent infections; (2) failure to thrive in infancy; (3) known ...

Patients with Immunodeficiency
Medical Clinics of North America, 2013Patients presenting in an immunocompromised state merit special consideration when being evaluated for fitness to undergo surgery. A variety of immunodeficient conditions and their respective therapies, including human immunodeficiency virus, cancer, and transplantation, exert numerous systemic effects that may lead to multiorgan dysfunction ...

Immunomodulation and immunodeficiency
Veterinary Dermatology, 2004Abstract This article briefly reviews the concepts of immunodeficiency and immunomodulation as they relate to selected skin diseases in the dog and cat. Immunodeficiency states are uncommon and may be associated with a subnormal or down‐regulated immune system, including humoral deficiencies, such as IgA, and abnormal lymphocyte or neutrophil function.
