Endothelial GSDMD underlies LPS-induced systemic vascular injury and lethality

open access: yesJCI Insight
Endothelial injury destroys endothelial barrier integrity, triggering organ dysfunction and ultimately resulting in sepsis-related death. Considerable attention has been focused on identifying effective targets for inhibiting damage to endothelial cells ...

mTOR regulates T cell exhaustion and PD-1–targeted immunotherapy response during chronic viral infection

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2023
T cell exhaustion is a state of T cell dysfunction associated with expression of programmed death 1 (PD-1). Exhausted CD8+ T cells are maintained by self-renewing stem-like T cells that provide differentiated TIM3+ cells, a part of which possesses ...

Furin‐mediated protein processing in infectious diseases and cancer

open access: yesClinical & Translational Immunology, 2019
Proteolytic cleavage regulates numerous processes in health and disease. One key player is the ubiquitously expressed serine protease furin, which cleaves a plethora of proteins at polybasic recognition motifs.

Transcriptional profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles from prebiopsy prostate cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RNA profiling of circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) from blood samples of men undergoing prostate biopsy identifies transcripts associated with clinically significant prostate cancer. Integrative analysis with public tumor datasets links EV‐derived gene signatures to tumor stage and progression‐free survival, highlighting CASP3, XRCC2, and RIT1 ...

Tamm-Horsfall protein augments neutrophil NETosis during urinary tract infection

open access: yesJCI Insight
Urinary neutrophils are a hallmark of urinary tract infection (UTI), yet the mechanisms governing their activation, function, and efficacy in controlling infection remain incompletely understood.

Asymptomatic or mild symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection elicits durable neutralizing antibody responses in children and adolescents

open access: yesJCI Insight, 2021
As SARS-CoV-2 continues to spread globally, questions have emerged regarding the strength and durability of immune responses in specific populations. In this study, we evaluated humoral immune responses in 69 children and adolescents with asymptomatic or

Immunological barrier for infectious diseases [PDF]

open access: yesApplicationes Mathematicae, 1997
Summary: A nonlinear mathematical model with distributed delay is proposed to describe the reaction of a human organism to a pathogen agent. The stability of the disease free state is analyzed, showing that there exists a large set of initial conditions in the attraction basin of the disease-free state whose border is defined as the immunological ...

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Phylogenetic analysis reveals a correlation between the expansion of very virulent infectious bursal disease virus and reassortment of its genome segment B [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Infectious bursa] disease virus (IBDV) is a birnavirus causing immunosuppressive disease in chickens. Emergence of the very virulent form of IBDV (vvIBDV) in the late 1980s dramatically changed the epidemiology of the disease.

BTK drives neutrophil activation for sterilizing antifungal immunity

open access: yesThe Journal of Clinical Investigation
We describe a previously unappreciated role for Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) in fungal immune surveillance against aspergillosis, an unforeseen complication of BTK inhibitors (BTKi) used for treating B cell lymphoid malignancies.
