Natural Experiment Evidence on the Effect of Migration on Blood Pressure and Hypertension [PDF]

open access: yes
Over 200 million people live outside their country of birth and experience large gains in material well-being by moving to where wages are higher. But the effect of this migration on health is less clear and existing evidence is ambiguous because of the ...

Experimental Investigation of Wave Impact Loads Induced by a Three-Dimensional Dam Break

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
This study presents a detailed experimental investigation of wave impact loads generated by a 3D dam break flow over a dry horizontal bed. Three-dimensionality is induced by a rigid obstacle partially blocking the channel, tested in both symmetric and ...

Invisible but not inaccessible—Revealing transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins with solution NMR and complementary methods

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins may be ‘invisible’ to direct detection yet remain accessible to solution NMR through equilibrium‐exchange measurements and pressure‐jump experiments. Complementary methods report on mass, stoichiometry, selected distance distributions, morphology, and internal packing.

Flows of Knowledge: A Method for Impact Assessment

open access: yes
The Flows of Knowledge evaluation method, as introduced by Meagher, Lyall and Nutley (2008) and described in Edwards and Meagher (2020), provides a framework for assessing the impacts of scientific research on policy and practice.

Soft motions encoded by the fold and mediated by conserved hinge sites drive V‐ATPase allosteric machinery and autoinhibition

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Vacuolar H+‐ATPase (V‐ATPase) is a multisubunit rotary proton pump that acidifies intracellular compartments. Using elastic network models, we identified conserved hinge residues that govern its large‐scale functional motions. We show that intrinsically encoded ‘soft modes’ drive critical functional transitions, including rotary catalysis and ...

Evaluation of the Intensity of Heat and Mass Transfer Processes in Cavitation Environments

open access: yesEnergies
This study investigates the impact of cavitation phenomena on heat and mass transfer in working fluids. To quantify the intensity of transport processes within cavitation bubble clusters, a numerical analysis of bubble dynamics was carried out with ...

High pressure impacts on meteorites

open access: yesPure and Applied Chemistry, 2019
Abstract In the invited article, we review observations on changes in meteorite texture relevant to the early stages of formation of the Solar System based on the experimental shock wave loading of the material at the laboratory. Investigation of the physical and structural properties of high-pressure impacts on meteorites is important ...

Comparing the paths of Hedgehog release in artificial and natural settings

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hh morphogens require solubilization factors to overcome their tight association with the plasma membrane and signal to distant cells, but the precise functions of these factors are controversial. Here, we use published in vivo observations as the most relevant evidence to test their suggested functions and discuss contradictions and gaps between in ...
