Local zigzag effects and brittle delamination fracture of n-layered beams using a structural theory with three displacement variables

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2020
Equivalent single layer theories for layered beams effectively and accurately predict global displacements and internal force and moment resultants using a limited number of displacement variables.

Heat Production in a Simply Supported Multilayer Elliptic Annulus Composite Plate and Its Associated Thermal Stresses [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Stress Analysis, 2018
This paper is concerned with the theoretical treatment of thermoelastic problem in multilayer elliptical composite plate and the generation of heat in the body as well as at the interfaces with imperfect thermal contact under arbitrary initial ...

Bacteria use structural imperfect mimicry to hijack the host interactome.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology, 2020
Bacteria use protein-protein interactions to infect their hosts and hijack fundamental pathways, which ensures their survival and proliferation. Hence, the infectious capacity of the pathogen is closely related to its ability to interact with host ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Advanced spectroscopic techniques for characterizing defects in perovskite solar cells

open access: yesCommunications Materials, 2023
There is currently substantial interest in commercializing perovskite solar cells as they offer superior properties over silicon-based solar cells, such as ability for bandgap tuning, higher absorption coefficients, and potentially lower manufacturing ...

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Recommendations for promoting user agency in the design of speech neuroprostheses

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2023
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) that directly decode speech from brain activity aim to restore communication in people with paralysis who cannot speak. Despite recent advances, neural inference of speech remains imperfect, limiting the ability for speech

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
