The lightning protection effects of power transmission lines are related to the impulse characteristics of grounding systems of transmission-line towers. The influences of several main factors on impulse grounding properties are systematically analyzed by simulation experiments according to the simulation theory in this study.

Lightning strikes may cause a rise in transmission tower potential which could produce a tower-to-phase flashover. This paper presents a computer-modeled technique applied to study this phenomena. 120 kV and 315 kV power lines have been modeled. Transmission tower potential is presented.

A simplified method for calculating the impulse resistance of vertical grounding rods
2002 IEEE Region 10 Conference on Computers, Communications, Control and Power Engineering. TENCOM '02. Proceedings., 2003A simplified method is proposed for calculating the impulse resistance of vertical grounding rods. The analytic formula is first derived to determine the low current resistance and then the calculation procedure is developed to estimate the impulse resistance.
