Queen control of a key life-history event in a eusocial insect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In eusocial insects, inclusive fitness theory predicts potential queen–worker conflict over the timing of events in colony life history. Whether queens or workers control the timing of these events is poorly understood.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Reproductive skew in cooperative breeding: Environmental variability, antagonistic selection, choice, and control

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2019
A multitude of factors may determine reproductive skew among cooperative breeders. One explanation, derived from inclusive fitness theory, is that groups can partition reproduction such that subordinates do at least as well as noncooperative solitary ...

Transcriptional network analysis of PTEN‐protein‐deficient prostate tumors reveals robust stromal reprogramming and signs of senescent paracrine communication

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining PTEN protein assessment and transcriptomic profiling of prostate tumors, we uncovered a network enriched in senescence and extracellular matrix (ECM) programs associated with PTEN loss and conserved in a mouse model. We show that PTEN‐deficient cells trigger paracrine remodeling of the surrounding stroma and this information could help ...

Fitness Estimation for Ecological Studies: An Evaluation in Columbian Ground Squirrels

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2020
The topics of evolution by natural selection and ecological interactions are closely intertwined. Thus, measurements of evolutionary fitness are ubiquitous in the ecological literature. As an empirical problem, the components of fitness, reproduction and

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.

Function attribution depends on the explanatory context: A Reply to Neander and Rosenberg's Reply to Nanay [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In ‘A modal theory of function’, I gave an argument against all existing theories of function and outlined a new theory. Karen Neander and Alex Rosenberg argue against both my negative and my positive claim.

Inclusive Fitness 101: Math Not Required [PDF]

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 2016
Inclusive fitness theory delivers a clever solution to the problem of altruism, especially the case of sterile worker castes in social insects. The idea behind the inclusive fitness theory is straight forward and contemporary: if you can somehow outsource reproduction, then you may reduce (or stop) personal reproduction.

Recurrent cancer‐associated ERBB4 mutations are transforming and confer resistance to targeted therapies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that the majority of the 18 analyzed recurrent cancer‐associated ERBB4 mutations are transforming. The most potent mutations are activating, co‐operate with other ERBB receptors, and are sensitive to pan‐ERBB inhibitors. Activating ERBB4 mutations also promote therapy resistance in EGFR‐mutant lung cancer.

Incentivising cooperation by judging a group’s performance by its weakest member in neuroevolution and reinforcement learning

open access: yesFrontiers in Robotics and AI
IntroductionAutonomous agents increasingly interact within social domains such as customer service, transportation, and healthcare, often acting collectively on behalf of humans.
