Small muscle mass aerobic exercise in health and disease: Unique insights into muscle vascular and metabolic control and performance

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Studies of small muscle mass exercise (SMME) have revealed that the peripheral O2 transport–utilization cascade is a dynamically regulated system in which perfusive and diffusive components can be selectively amplified, redistributed and mechanically limited depending on contraction pattern, recruitment strategy and intramuscular pressure ...

Macro‐ and microcirculatory factors affecting foot temperature change during walking

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Change in skin temperature is a complex process affected by several factors. During walking, increased microcirculatory activity, such as muscle metabolism, could increase foot temperature. The ensuing macrocirculatory responses, such as increased leg blood flow (LBF), might also increase foot temperature.

Real-time microcirculatory monitoring during intradialytic exercise using an earlobe laser Doppler flowmeter: an exploratory preliminary study

open access: yesRenal Replacement Therapy
Background Intradialytic exercise is recommended to improve exercise capacity, physical function, and quality of life in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD).

The invasive investigation of INOCA in the coronary catheterization lab

open access: yesAmerican Heart Journal Plus
Over half of all patients with angina have no angiographically demonstratable obstructive coronary disease, with a significant proportion of these patients having undiagnosed microvascular dysfunction and/or vasospastic angina.

Index of Microcirculatory Resistance to predict microvascular obstruction in STEMI: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesCatheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions
AbstractBackgroundMicrovascular obstruction (MVO) is an independent predictor of adverse cardiac events after ST‐elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The Index of Microcirculatory Resistance (IMR) may be a useful marker of MVO, which could simplify the care pathway without the need for Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR).

Neuromuscular fatigability with repeated exercise in hypoxia: From single‐joint paradigms to sprints

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Acute hypobaric or normobaric hypoxic exposure accelerates neuromuscular fatigability during repeated exercise. Indices of peripheral and central fatigue are not different at exhaustion in mild, moderate and severe hypoxia compared with normoxia, but task failure occurs earlier.

Catheter-based examination for pulmonary microcirculatory function in patients with pulmonary hypertension.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
A device that can evaluate human pulmonary microcirculation is currently unavailable. This study aimed to establish a novel approach for assessing pulmonary microcirculation in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH).

Coronary angiography-derived microcirculatory resistance predicts adverse cardiovascular events in elderly with unstable angina post-percutaneous coronary intervention

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging
BackgroundCoronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) has been increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The coronary angiography-derived index of microcirculatory resistance (caIMR) has emerged as a promising ...

Scaling temporal resolution from mice to humans: Challenges and innovations in preclinical imaging of translational models

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Temporal scaling physiology differs significantly between mice and humans. Mice have higher metabolism, heart and respiratory rate, as well as faster blood flow rates, brain activity and physiological dynamics over time. These differences influence the temporal resolution needed in preclinical imaging of mouse models to ...

A hemorheological perspective on coronary microvascular dysfunction: Association of erythrocyte parameters with angiography-derived coronary microcirculatory resistance.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
BackgroundCoronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) contributes to myocardial ischemia in patients both without obstructive coronary artery disease (e.g., MINOCA/INOCA) and in those with co-existing epicardial stenosis.
