Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans, 2009
Impacts of the South China Sea Throughflow (SCST) on seasonal and interannual variations of the Indonesian Throughflow are studied by comparing outputs from ocean general circulation model (OGCM) experiments with and without the SCST. The observed subsurface maximum in the southward flow through the Makassar Strait is simulated only when the SCST ...

Geostrophic transport of Indonesian throughflow
Deep Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers, 1995Abstract The Indonesian throughflow was measured during a six year period, permitting estimates of the mean and mean annual cycle of volume transport. The measurements are based on regularly repeated XBT sections, which were used with the climatological T/S relationship to calculate geostrophic currents relative to 400 m.

Fifty Years of the Indonesian Throughflow*
Journal of Climate, 2009Abstract Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) reanalysis data are used to produce a 50-yr record of flow through the Makassar Strait, the primary conduit for the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF). Two time series are constructed for comparison to the flow through the Makassar Strait as observed during 1997–98 and 2004–06: SODA along-channel ...

A diagnostic study of the Indonesian Throughflow
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2000The objective of this study is to derive estimates of the mean seasonal variations in the Pacific to Indian Ocean throughflow transport using climatological data of the temperature/salinity fields and surface wind stress. A variable grid global general circulation model (GCM) with 1/6° resolution in Indonesian seas configured with ETOP05 bottom ...

Neogene history of the Indonesian Throughflow
2004The Indonesian Throughflow acts as a major switchboard in the global thermohaline circulation, and its variability is strongly related to tropical climate dynamics on shorter and longer timescales. During the Holocene and Pleistocene, fluctuating sea surface temperature and salinity patterns in the Western Pacific Warm Water Pool and Indonesian Seas ...

The Role of Indonesian Throughflow in a Global Ocean GCM
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1993Abstract The effect of the Indonesian Throughflow on the World Ocean circulation is examined by a series of experiments with a global ocean GCM. The principal objective is to gain an understanding of how ocean flows respond to the throughflow, and how these changes result in changes in the pattern of surface heat flux and sea surface temperature.

What controls the origin of the Indonesian throughflow?
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1996The question of which water enters the Indonesian passages is a subject of outstanding debate. This article represents another attempt to address this issue using a new nonlinear model. The new model illustrates that the origin and composition of the Indonesian throughflow are determined by the structure of the opposing and retroflecting currents ...

Current variability at the Pacific entrance of the Indonesian Throughflow
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1999Current variability at the Pacific entrance of the Indonesian Throughflow is investigated using direct current and hydrographic measurements. Two moorings with three current meters (depths of 350, 550, and 1050 m) and one conductivity‐temperature‐depth profiler (260 m) were deployed at 4°1′N, 127°31′E and 3°11′N, 128°27′E between Talaud Islands and ...

Seasonal Variation of the Indonesian Throughflow in Makassar Strait
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 2012Abstract The seasonal variation of Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) transport is investigated using ocean general circulation model experiments with the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). Twenty-eight years (1981–2008) of ⅓° Indo-Pacific basin HYCOM simulations and three years (2004–06) from a global HYCOM simulation are analyzed.

Coral radiocarbon constraints on the source of the Indonesian throughflow
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1997Radiocarbon variability in Porites spp. corals from Guam and the Makassar Strait (Indonesian Seaway) was used to identify the source waters contributing to the Indonesian throughflow. Time series with bimonthly resolution were constructed using accelerator mass spectrometry.
