Transient induced drag

AIAA Journal, 1986
In the present treatment of the calculation of forces on a wing that is suddenly brought into motion at a constant speed, attention is given to the unsteady potential's contribution to the force balance. Total bound vorticity is produced at the initial impulse. The results obtained are independent of wing aspect ratio; as time increases, this effect on

A Digression on Induced Drag

Aerotecnica Missili & Spazio, 2003
Induced drag is commonly regarded as the undesired side effect of the lift generation in finite aspect ratio wings, which may lead to the erroneous conclusion that infinite wings and non-lifting finite wings are definitely induced drag free. In this work wing systems are investigated which, in spite of being non lifting, generate induced drag.

Structure and Induced Drag of a Tip Vortex

Journal of Aircraft, 2004
The three-dimensional flow structure of a tip vortex in the near wake of both a rectangular, square-tipped NACA 0015 airfoil and a high-lift cambered airfoil was investigated by using a seven-hole pressure probe at Re = 2.01 x 10 5 . Lift-induced drag was computed based on vorticity and was compared with force-balance data. For both the airfoils tested,

Effect of flow shear on induced drag.

AIAA Journal, 1967
V Karman and Tsien formulated the lifting line theory for a wing in nonuniform flow in 1945. In their formulation, the approaching flow may have arbitrary variations in the plane perpendicular to the flight direction. By working with the perturbation pressure rather than the perturbation velocities, they have obtained the condition for the minimum ...

A Relationship Between Wave Drag and Induced Drag

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2003
<div class="htmlview paragraph">A formulation for the induced drag of a wing in subsonic or transonic flow is derived from entropy considerations. This approach shows how wave drag and induced drag are related. The new formulation is cast in a form similar to that used in the classic induced drag derivation thus allowing a theoretical comparison ...

Induced Drag - Historical Perspective

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1989
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Many modem aircraft missions require high values of aerodynamic efficiency with aircraft having wings of relatively restricted span lengths. In many of these missions, the aircraft must operate at relatively large values of the lift coefficients, and the large induced drag associated with the small span ...

Viscous induced drag

6th Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 1988
A fundamentally new approach to the aircraft minimum induced drag problem is presented. The method, a 'viscous lifting line', is based on the minimum entropy production principle and does not require the planar wake assumption. An approximate, closed form solution is obtained and compared with several classical results.

Induced Drag of a Bird Flock

The American Naturalist, 1978
It is likely that birds such as geese, which migrate in horizontal V formation, save appreciable energy from the mutual aerodynamic interaction which can decrease their induced drag, an effect recently analyzed in some detail by Lissaman and Shollenberger (1970).

Minimum Induced Drag

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1942
IT is fairly well known that for any given wing arrangement—monoplane, biplane, monoplane with end‐plates corresponding with an increasingly popular type of tail unit, etc.—there is a definite lift distribution associated with the minimum value of induced drag of which a particular span is capable.

Minimum Induced Drag Theorems for Multiwing Systems

AIAA Journal, 2016
Under the assumption of a rigid wake aligned with the freestream velocity, a computationally efficient induced drag minimization procedure, tailored for the preliminary design phases of generic mul...
