The mechanism of the polymer-induced drag reduction in blood

Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces, 2013
Literature reports provide evidence that nanomolar concentrations of spaghetti-like, high molecular weight polymers decrease the hydrodynamic resistance of blood thereby improving impaired blood circulation. It has been suggested that the polymer-induced drag reduction is caused by the corralling of red blood cells (RBCs) among extended macromolecules ...

The induced drag on a rolling wing

The Aeronautical Journal, 1972
In a recent paper Garner discusses, among other topics, the induced (inviscid) drag or lift dependent drag, on finite wings which have effective antisymmetric incidence distributions. One example concerns a finite wing whose incidence varies linearly in the spanwise direction asThis wing experiences an overall induced drag which is made up from two ...

Polymer-induced drag reduction in turbulent flows

Physical Review E, 1996
We present a hydrodynamic model for polymer-induced drag reduction in turbulent flows. Our theory uses the stirred fluid model for isotropic turbulence. The effect of a polymer additive on the velocity field of the fluid is taken into account to lowest order in the concentration of the solute.

Turbulence in Plasma-Induced Hypersonic Drag Reduction

AIAA Journal, 2001
With the use of a pressure-ruptured shock tube, an experimental study of the dynamics of shock waves in weakly ionized argon, krypton, xenon, and neon glow discharge plasmas has been performed. For Mach numbers in the range 1.5 ‐3, our results show that there is an increase in the velocity of a shock wave when it makes a transition from a neutral gas ...

Induced Drag of a Twisted Wing

Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1943
in which CL is the wing lift coefficient, A the aspect ratio and a the induced-drag factor. Although valid for an untwisted wing (section zero-lift chords all parallel), Eq. (1) gives incorrect values for a twisted wing. For example, CDI = 0 in Eq. (1) when CL = 0, while the induced-drag coefficient of a twisted wing is never zero.

Minimization of Induced Drag of Elastic Airplane

10th AIAA/ISSMO Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization Conference, 2004
The main purpose of this work is to develop an effectiv e procedure for computation and optimization of induced drag of an elastic airplane, as well as to consider different methods to realize drag optimum values. On the base of the standard panel method, the relations has been obtained that allows the matrix o f quadratic form for induced drag to be ...

Induced Drag of Wings of Finite Aspect Ratio

AIAA Journal, 1993
The vortex sheet produced at the end of an aeroplane wing during flight rolls up into a vortex attached to the wing. A formula is assumed for the strength of the vorticity, which is substituted into another formula for the vortex drag induced on the wing.

Induced drag of wings in ground effect

The Aeronautical Journal, 2016
ABSTRACTThis paper provides a set of closed form solutions for the lift and drag of wings flying in ground effect both with and without end plates. The developed theories are based on observations of several independent sources of controlled model tests over ground planes and over water and on previous theories prepared by researchers from the original
