Intracloacal infection with avian infectious bronchitis virus

An infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) strain HS-91 isolated from kidneys of chicks which died of nephrosis was inoculated via the cloaca of specific pathogen-free (SPF) chicks. These chicks showed more severe clinical signs, grosser kidney lesions and higher mortality than chicks inoculated with the same IBV strain via the trachea.

Pathogenesis of H13 Nephropathogenic Infectious Bronchitis Virus

A nephropathogenic Massachusetts strain of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) designated H13-IBV was isolated from the kidneys of commercial broilers. H13-IBV caused respiratory distress, depression, and diarrhea in specific-pathogen-free chickens. Gross renal lesions included pale coloration, swelling, and urate deposition.

Summary The reaction between infectious bronchitis virus-42 (Beaudette) and neutralizing antibody, and dissociation of the antigen-antibody complex, was studied by the plaque technique using chicken embryo kidney cell cultures. Neutralization was a first-order reaction dependent upon time and concentration of antibody.

The replication of infectious bronchitis virus in fowl trachea

Domestic fowl were exposed to an aerosol of infectious bronchitis virus. Birds were killed at intervals after infection and sections of trachea were examined in the electron microscope. The virus replicated in superficial cells,i.e., ciliated epithelial cells and mucus cells.

Two strains of infectious bronchitis virus were propagated serially in stationary flask cultures of chick embryo tissues. Both strains of virus could be grown in tube cultures of chick embryo tissues. Virus was produced by the cells for approximately one month without any evidence of damage to the cells.
