Avian Influenza Viruses in Water Birds, Africa

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2007
We report the first large-scale surveillance of avian influenza viruses in water birds conducted in Africa. This study shows evidence of avian influenza viruses in wild birds, both Eurasian and Afro-tropical species, in several major wetlands of Africa.

Avian Influenza in Wild Birds, Central Coast of Peru

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2009
To determine genotypes of avian influenza virus circulating among wild birds in South America, we collected and tested environmental fecal samples from birds along the coast of Peru, June 2006–December 2007.

Pathogenic assessment of avian influenza viruses in migratory birds [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Microbes & Infections, 2021
ABSTRACTSeveral subtypes of avian influenza (AI) viruses have caused human infections in recent years; however, there is a severe knowledge gap regarding the capacity of wild bird viruses to infect mammals. To assess the risk of mammalian infection by AI viruses from their natural reservoirs, a panel of isolates from 34 wild birds was examined in ...

Ecology of Avian Influenza Virus in Birds [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2008
Avian influenza A virus (an orthomyxovirus) is a zoonotic pathogen with a natural reservoir entirely in birds. The influenza virus genome is an 8-segment single-stranded RNA with high potential for in situ recombination. Two segments code for the hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) antigens used for host-cell entry.

Influenza viruses in birds: rapid identification by counterimmunoelectrophoresis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 1979
Counterimmunoelectrophoresis with an antiserum raised in rabbits against the M protein of the avian N virus proved to be particularly useful for large-scale identification of influenza A virus isolates. Of a total of 231 hemagglutinating agents isolated from 1,656 rectal swabs collected from shore and open-country birds, 158 could be identified as ...

Avian influenza infections in birds – a moving target [PDF]

open access: yesInfluenza and Other Respiratory Viruses, 2007
Avian influenza (AI) is a complex infection of birds, of which the ecology and epidemiology have undergone substantial changes over the last decade. Avian influenza viruses infecting poultry can be divided into two groups. The very virulent viruses cause highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), with flock mortality as high as 100%.

Modeling highly pathogenic avian influenza transmission in wild birds and poultry in West Bengal, India. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Wild birds are suspected to have played a role in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 outbreaks in West Bengal. Cluster analysis showed that H5N1 was introduced in West Bengal at least 3 times between 2008 and 2010.

Movements of Birds and Avian Influenza from Asia into Alaska

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2007
Asian-origin avian influenza (AI) viruses are spread in part by migratory birds. In Alaska, diverse avian hosts from Asia and the Americas overlap in a region of intercontinental avifaunal mixing.

Annual report on surveillance for avian influenza in poultry and wild birds in Member States of the European Union in 2021

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2022
European Union (EU) Member States (MSs) are required to carry out surveillance for avian influenza (AI) in poultry and wild birds and notify the results to the responsible authority.

AVIAN INFLUENZA INFECTIONS IN NONMIGRANT LAND BIRDS IN ANDEAN PERU [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Diseases, 2012
As part of ongoing surveillance for avian influenza viruses (AIV) in Peruvian birds, in June 2008, we sampled 600 land birds of 177 species, using real-time reverse-transcription PCR. We addressed the assumption that AIV prevalence is low or nil among land birds, a hypodiesis that was not supported by the results-rather, we found AIV infections at ...
