First detection of SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.529 (Omicron) in Ecuador

open access: yesNew Microbes and New Infections, 2022
The National Institute of Research and Public Health reported the first local record of the Omicron variant detected in Ecuador. A fully vaccinated subject returned from South Africa with a negative RT-PCR.

Viruses disrupt functions of human lymphocytes. Effects of measles virus and influenza virus on lymphocyte-mediated killing and antibody production. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
We present experimental data that offer, in part, a better understanding of the immunosuppression that accompanies measles virus infection. We note that measles virus "silently" infects human lymphocytes and that the infection does not alter lymphocyte ...

Integrating influenza antigenic dynamics with molecular evolution. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Influenza viruses undergo continual antigenic evolution allowing mutant viruses to evade host immunity acquired to previous virus strains. Antigenic phenotype is often assessed through pairwise measurement of cross-reactivity between influenza strains ...

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

The host RNA polymerase II C-terminal domain is the anchor for replication of the influenza virus genome

open access: yesNature Communications
The current model is that the influenza virus polymerase (FluPol) binds either to host RNA polymerase II (RNAP II) or to the acidic nuclear phosphoprotein 32 (ANP32), which drives its conformation and activity towards transcription or replication of the ...

Detection of Influenza and Other Respiratory Pathogens by RT-qPCR and Characterization by Genomic Sequencing Using ILI/SARI Hospital-Based Sentinel Surveillance System

open access: yesViruses
Limited surveillance and laboratory testing for non-influenza viruses remains a challenge in Uganda. The World Health Organization (WHO) designated National Influenza Center (NIC) tested samples from patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe ...

Propagation of Rhinovirus C in Differentiated Immortalized Human Airway HBEC3-KT Epithelial Cells

open access: yesViruses, 2019
Rhinoviruses (RVs) are classified into three species: RV-A, B, and C. Unlike RV-A and -B, RV-C cannot be propagated using standard cell culture systems. In order to isolate RV-Cs from clinical specimens and gain a better understanding of their biological

Further evidence of the circulation of PMV-4 and influenza viruses with N2 - 1957 enzyme in migratory waterfowls [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
I n the years 1980—1984, one paramyxovirus type 4 and 11 influenza viruses were isolated from cloacal swabs collected from migratory waterfowls in Fed. Rep. Germany.

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Newcastle disease virus in Egyptian domestic poultry, 2019–2021: Molecular characterization, phylogenetic analysis, and coinfection with avian influenza A virus

open access: yesOpen Veterinary Journal
Background: Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) is a major viral disease of poultry that causes outbreaks in chickens in Egypt. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and molecular characteristics of NDV and its cocirculation with avian
