Genomic Analysis and Virulence Features of Vibrio cholerae Non-O1/Non-O139 Harbouring CARB-Type β-Lactamases From Freshwater Bodies, Argentina. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
Genomic analysis of ampicillin‐resistant Vibrio cholerae non‐O1/non‐O139 from central Argentina's freshwater bodies identified four novel CARB‐β‐lactamase variants linked to the V. cholerae superintegron. An unusual VPI‐1 arrangement encoding the TCP pilus and a type VI secretion system subclass i5 was also found, associated with increased ...

Labelling fish diets with 15 N -Leucine for monitoring feed consumption and bio-distribution in Atlantic salmon. [PDF]

open access: yesVet Med Sci, 2022
Administration of the labelled food to fish allows knowing the real consumption of food by fish. It is possible to determine the distribution and metabolism of nitrogen coming from the labeled amino acids. The marker added to the food can be detected since hours post feed, until its complete elimination form fish, with high sensitivity.

Influence of landfill use on nest‐site selection and breeding success in white storks

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 321, Issue 3, Page 175-187, November 2023., 2023
Breeding near landfills may determine habitat preference and selection in white storks, however breeding success depends on habitat quality in the surrounding area more than the distance to the landfill. Abstract Landscape transformation by humans through habitat degradation, agriculture intensification and urbanization results in the loss of natural ...

Exploiting waste derived from Musa spp. processing: Banana and plantain

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, Volume 17, Issue 4, Page 1046-1067, July/August 2023., 2023
Abstract Banana and plantain (Musa spp.) are among the most popular crops especially in tropical and sub‐tropical zones. Musa spp. is a unique, perennial, single‐harvest plant that after fruit harvesting is decapitated and generates large amounts of waste and by‐products: leaves and pseudostem.

Effects of synthetic acid rain and organic and inorganic acids on survival and CaCO3 piercing stylets in tardigrades

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 339, Issue 6, Page 578-589, July 1, 2023., 2023
Tardigrades species exhibit differential sensitivity to synthetic acid rain and natural occurring acids based on pH, acid nature, exposure duration, and species (freshwater species exhibit greater resistance). Aragonite piercing stylets of feeding apparatus maintain their morphology when tardigrades are exposed to acids.

Stalked by the Malignant Father's Spirit: A Case of Patricide among the Yagwoia (PNG)

open access: yesOceania, Volume 93, Issue 2, Page 137-164, July 2023., 2023
ABSTRACT Among the Yagwoia (PNG), the dynamics of fatherhood is a process of man's transmission to and incorporation of his vital substance by his progeny. In this way, the father becomes replaced principally by his son(s). This process, referred to as the incorporation and replacement of the father's ‘bone’, has multiple actualisations whose concrete ...

Combining DNA metabarcoding and ecological networks to inform conservation biocontrol by small vertebrate predators

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 31, Issue 8, December 2021., 2021
Abstract In multifunctional landscapes, diverse communities of flying vertebrate predators provide vital services of insect pest control. In such landscapes, conservation biocontrol should benefit service‐providing species to enhance the flow, stability and resilience of pest control services supporting the production of food and fiber.

Two cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus successfully treated with probiotics

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 8, Issue 12, Page 3119-3124, December 2020., 2020
The gut microbiota, and particularly probiotic bacteria, has emerged as a promising and novel intervention to fight the looming worldwide diabetes epidemic when combined with the appropriate medication. Herein, we report two cases of patient with type 2 diabetes refractory to conventional therapy that showed notable improvement after probiotic ...
