The Gift that Keeps on Giving: Google, Ingress, and the Gift of Surveillance

open access: yes, 2014
This essay analyzes Ingress, Google’s new massively multiplayer online game, as indicative of an emergent gift economy that calls for the datafication of one’s mobile life in exchange for the gift of play.

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Modelling of chloride ingress in concrete based on benchmarking field results

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
Modelling the ingress of chloride ions into the cover of a concrete structure is a phenomenon that is gaining an increasing attention of the research community, but even more, from the engineering practice.

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...

Theoretical modelling of hot gas ingestion through turbine rim seals

open access: yesPropulsion and Power Research, 2012
The rim seals of gas turbines are used to prevent or reduce the ingestion of hot mainstream gas into the wheel-space between the turbine rotor and its adjacent stationary casing.

Moisture ingress in cracked cementitious materials

open access: yes, 2018
Wedge split test specimens were conditioned to a relative humidity of 50%, deformed to various damage states, and exposed to liquid water. Water ingress was monitored using x-ray attenuation measurements and compared to numerical predictions.

The ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy as guardians of the cellular proteome

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This Perspective covers the three principles governing the crosstalk between the ubiquitin‐proteasome system and autophagy in cellular proteostasis: (1) a shared ubiquitin code routing substrates via shuttle factors or autophagy receptors; (2) spatial compartmentalization into phase‐separated degradation hubs and organelle‐specific modules (exemplified

Ingress Well-Played: City as MMO [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper describes player experience for Ingress, a geo-local, mobile augmented reality game created by Google’s Niantic Labs. Ingress incorporates aspects of both pervasive, alternate reality (ARG) and massively multiplayer online (MMO) games. However,

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Review of Water Ingress Characteristic of Stressed Masonry

open access: yes, 2001
Studies have found that over 80% of total water ingress occurs at the brick/mortar interface and not through the brick unit or the mortar. The interface between the brick and mortar is influenced by the tensile bond strength between the two, which is ...
