The interaction between excitation and inhibition is analyzed for nerve cylinders when reversal potentials for synaptic action are included. Both impulsive and sustained conductance changes are employed to model synaptic action. Exact results, in terms of Green's functions are obtained for the solutions of the cable equation with reversal potentials ...

Two experiments assess adult age differences in the extent of inhibition or negative priming generated in a selective-attention task. Younger adults consistently demonstrated negative priming effects; they were slower to name a letter on a current trial that had served as a distractor on the previous trial relative to one that had not occurred on the ...

This article explores the notion of inhibition at a theoretical and clinical level in psychoanalysis. The first part follows the development of the notion in Freud's work, from the "Project" (1950a [1895]) to Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety (1926d). It identifies the two approaches to inhibition, the first from an energetic point of view, the second ...

The effect upon spermatogenesis of subdermal silastic capsules containing testosterone in combination with various oral drugs was studied in groups of subfertile men. Group 1 received 25 mg norethisterone daily by mouth in conjunction with 6 norethindrone implants and 3 testosterone implants.

Diagnosis of enzyme inhibition based on the degree of inhibition
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2003In this work, a method for the diagnosis of kinetic inhibition, based on the dependence of the degree of inhibition (epsilon(i)) on the inhibitor concentration [I] and on the substrate concentration [S], is presented. Because the degree of inhibition is a ratio between rates, kinetic data are normalized by the introduction of an internal control-the ...

Abstract Visual spatio-temporal inhibition effects were investigated with the aid of “jumping flashes” (pairs of point flashes, separated in time and space). Plots of the visibility of the jumping flashes against the interval time, produced visibility curves in which two dips (representing inhibition effects) were observed.

Humans are exposed through ingestion or inhalation to preformed N-nitroso compounds (NOC) in the environment and through the endogenous nitrosation of amino precursors in the body. Activated macrophages and bacterial strains isolated from human infections can enzymatically produce nitrosating agents and NOC from precursors at neutral pH.

PIP: The mechanism and hormonal regulation of lactation is explained and illustrated with a schematic representation. Circulating estrogen above a critical amount seems to be the inhibitory factor controlling lactation during pregnancy. Once delivery occurs, the level of estrogen falls, that of prolactin rises, and lactation begins.

Immediately following an event at a peripheral location there is facilitation for the processing of other stimuli near that location. This is said to reflect a reflexive shift of attention towards the source of stimulation. After attention is removed from such a peripheral location, there is then delayed responding to stimuli subsequently displayed ...
