Single Synapse LTP: A Matter of Context?

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2019
The most commonly studied form of synaptic plasticity is long-term potentiation (LTP). Over the last 15 years, it has been possible to induce structural and functional LTP in dendritic spines using two-photon glutamate uncaging, allowing for studying the

Intermediate Resistive State in Wafer‐Scale Vertical MoS2 Memristors Through Lateral Silver Filament Growth for Artificial Synapse Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In MOCVD MoS2 memristors, a current compliance‐regulated Ag filament mechanism is revealed. The filament ruptures spontaneously during volatile switching, while subsequent growth proceeds vertically through the MoS2 layers and then laterally along the van der Waals gaps during nonvolatile switching.

Multimode Oxide‐Based Optoelectronic Memtransistor for In‐Sensor Vision Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A multimode optoelectronic memtransistor (OEMT) is demonstrated for vision explainable artificial intelligence (VXAI) hardware. By integrating optical sensing, electrical masking, and non‐volatile memory, the device enables key operations required for generating saliency information.

A synapse which can switch from inhibitory to excitatory and back

open access: yes, 2005
Co-release of transmitters has recently been observed at synapse terminals and can even be a combination such as glutamate and GABA. A second recent experimental finding is a short-term synaptic plasticity, which depends on postsynaptic depolarization ...

An Epigenetic Fate Converter Based on Nuclei‐Targeting Lipid Nanoparticles Drives Neuronal Programming of Stem Cells for Spinal Cord Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of LNP‐MPG nuclei‐targeting delivery of HMW‐FGF2 promoting histone acetylation to regulate the fate of DPSCs and treat spinal cord injury. LNPs components include pHMW‐FGF2 plasmid, DSPC, Dlin‐MC3‐DMA, cholesterol, and PEG2000, and are modified with MPG to form HMW‐FGF2@LNP‐MPG (HLM). HLM nuclei‐targets DPSCs to deliver HMW‐FGF2,

The balancing act of GABAergic synapse organizers

open access: yes, 2015
GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) is the main neurotransmitter at inhibitory synapses in the mammalian brain. It is essential for maintaining the excitation and inhibition (E/I) ratio, whose imbalance underlies various brain diseases. Emerging information about

Quantification of the density of cooperative neighboring synapses required to evoke endocannabinoid signaling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The spatial pattern of synapse activation may impact on synaptic plasticity. This applies to the synaptically-evoked endocannabinoid-mediated short-term depression at the parallel fiber (PF) to Purkinje cell synapse, the occurrence of which requires ...

The Role of GABAergic Inhibition in Ocular Dominance Plasticity

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 2011
During the last decade, we have gained much insight into the mechanisms that open and close a sensitive period of plasticity in the visual cortex. This brings the hope that novel treatments can be developed for brain injuries requiring renewed plasticity

Genetic Deletion of GABAA Receptors Reveals Distinct Requirements of Neurotransmitter Receptors for GABAergic and Glutamatergic Synapse Development

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2019
In the adult brain GABAA receptors (GABAARs) mediate the majority of synaptic inhibition that provides inhibitory balance to excitatory drive and controls neuronal output.
