Citizen Science to Raise Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness in the Community: The MicroMundo Project in Spain and Portugal. [PDF]

open access: yesMicrob Biotechnol
We review here the activity over the years of MicroMundo, a consolidated citizen science and service‐learning Project operating from over 30 Spanish and Portuguese universities, which involves students from different educational levels in the search for antibiotic activities in microorganisms isolated from soil samples.

Participation of apoptotic markers in the process of maturation and elimination of spermatozoa in the epididymis of the Corynorhinus mexicanus bat

open access: yesMolecular Reproduction and Development, Volume 90, Issue 8-9, Page 749-757, August-September., 2023
Abstract The Corynorhinus mexicanus bat is characterized by a specific form of reproductive asynchrony between males and females. After mating, some sperm remain in the male's epididymis, the organ where the sperm had matured. It has not yet been determined if apoptotic markers participate in the process of the maturation and/or elimination of these ...

Teaching calculus in the first year of an engineering degree using a Digital Escape Room in an online scenario

open access: yesComputer Applications in Engineering Education, Volume 31, Issue 3, Page 676-695, May 2023., 2023
Abstract In recent years, the way in which mathematics is taught has changed radically and there has been an increase in the percentage of online classes. One of the biggest challenges that teachers face in this type of online scenario is the need to motivate students so that they do not lose the thread and continue with their usual rhythm and seek ...

Evening types as determined by subjective and objective measures are more emotional eaters

open access: yesObesity, Volume 31, Issue 5, Page 1192-1203, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Objective This study aimed to determine the association between being an evening type (ET; defined subjectively by the Morning‐Evening Questionnaire or objectively by the dim‐light melatonin onset [DLMO] timing) and reporting emotional eating (EE) behaviors.

Identification of histological threshold concepts in health sciences curricula: Students' perception

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, Volume 16, Issue 1, Page 171-182, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Students' metacognitive skills and perceptions are considered important variables for high‐quality learning. In this study, students' perceptions were used to identify histological threshold concepts (integrative, irreversible, transformative, and troublesome) in three health sciences curricula.

A Mathcad‐based educational experience to address the design of nonisothermal plug flow reactors

open access: yesComputer Applications in Engineering Education, Volume 30, Issue 4, Page 1145-1160, July 2022., 2022
Abstract Mathcad is a simple‐to‐use and intuitive mathematical software that helps students to minimize the mathematical difficulties involved in solving engineering problems. The design of nonisothermal plug flow reactors (PFR) is a fundamental issue within the field of chemical reaction engineering; however, its teaching–learning process is hindered ...

Boosting Cholesterol Efflux from Foam Cells by Sequential Administration of rHDL to Deliver MicroRNA and to Remove Cholesterol in a Triple‐Cell 2D Atherosclerosis Model

open access: yesSmall, Volume 18, Issue 13, April 1, 2022., 2022
Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of mortality worldwide, is primarily caused by atherosclerosis. Although disease management has improved significantly, new therapeutic strategies are needed. An efficient two‐step administration of nanoparticles is shown here to deliver antagomiR‐33a and to boost cholesterol efflux.

Spatial Patterns of Ceroxylon parvifrons (Engel) H.Wendl of the Montane Forests in Southern Ecuador

open access: yesInternational Journal of Forestry Research, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
The species of the genus Ceroxylon have narrow geographical ranges, and subsequently, their populations are subjected to a high degree of fragmentation due to deforestation and land conversion. Ceroxylon parvifrons (Engel) H. Wendl is a representative floristic species of the Andean rainforest; however, little information related to its natural history,

First description of betalains biosynthesis in an aquatic organism: characterization of 4,5‐DOPA‐extradiol‐dioxygenase activity in the cyanobacteria Anabaena cylindrica

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 13, Issue 6, Page 1948-1959, November 2020., 2020
This paper describes molecular and functional characterization of a novel dioxygenase enzyme from the aquatic cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica. The enzyme showed a strong inhibition by excess of the precursor L‐DOPA. However, its heterologous expression has allowed detecting the formation of the main compounds in the biosynthetic pathway of betalains.
