The role of mixed-layer instabilities in submesoscale turbulence

open access: yesJournal of Fluid Mechanics, 2015
Upper-ocean turbulence at scales smaller than the mesoscale is believed to exchange surface and thermocline waters, which plays an important role in both physical and biogeochemical budgets. But what energizes this submesoscale turbulence remains a topic

A one-dimensional beam model for coupled instabilities

open access: yes, 2000
The subject of coupled instabilities is a field of research with a wide range of practical applications, particularly in the analysis and design of metal structures. Despite the excellent body of existing results concerning coupled instability structural

The cascade structure of linear instability in collapsible channel flows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper studies the unsteady behaviour and linear stability of the flow in a collapsible channel using a fluid–beam model. The solid mechanics is analysed in a plane strain configuration, in which the principal stretch is defined with a zero initial ...

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

Dusty plasma in space [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 1998
Dusty plasmas consist of electrons, ions and charged dust particles observed in several astro-and space-physical environments such as nebulas, cometary tails, planetary rings, and planetary ionospheres.

Convective and absolute instabilities in non-Boussinesq mixed convection

open access: yes, 2007
[Abstract]: The problem of non-Boussinesq mixed convection in a vertical channel formed by two differentially heated infinite plates is investigated and the complete convective/absolute instability boundary is computed for a wide range of physical ...

Proteasomal degradation of intracellularly expressed Amblyomin‐X limits suicide gene therapy potential in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores the feasibility of expressing the antitumoral protein Amblyomin‐X through a suicide gene therapy approach and investigates its intracellular fate after gene delivery. Although the gene is efficiently expressed, melanoma cells rapidly degrade the Amblyomin‐X protein via proteasome activity.

Design oriented simulation of contact-friction instabilities in application to realistic brake assemblies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper presents advances in non-linear simulations for systems with contact-friction, with an application to brake squeal. A method is proposed to orient component structural modifications from brake assembly simulations in the frequency and time ...
