Effect of Configuration on Contaminated Insulator String Performance

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1972
The performance of transmission line insulators under contaminated conditions is affected by many variables, one of which is the configuration of the string on the tower. Reported field experience indicates that horizontal and Vee strings perform better than vertical.

Behavior of Long Insulator Strings in Dry Conditions

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1979
The behavior of long insulator strings under switching and lightning impulses and AC voltage is studied up to 750 kV. With increasing short-circuit currents, it is necessary to fix the spark between specially designed electrodes in order to preserve other metallic pieces from the thermal effects of the arc.

Potential and electric field distribution in a ceramic disc insulator string with faulty insulators

2012 IEEE 10th International Conference on the Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials, 2012
Ceramic/Porcelain suspension disc insulators are widely used in power systems to provide electrical insulation and mechanically support for high-voltage transmission lines. These insulators are subjected to a variety of stresses, including mechanical, electrical and environmental. These stresses act in unison.

Effect of insulator diameter on AC flashover voltage of an ice-covered insulator string

IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 2006
The effect of the diameter of an insulator covered with ice on its flashover voltage was investigated. The insulator diameter was simulated and varied by controlling the width of a layer of ice artificially accreted on a short string of 5 IEEE standard units. The 50% withstand voltage (V/sub 50/) was experimentally determined using the method described

A technique of detecting faulty insulator strings on ground

11th International Symposium on High-Voltage Engineering (ISH 99), 1999
We introduced a new portable instrument for online detection of faulty insulator strings on high voltage transmission lines in this paper. It is based on pattern recognition of the corona discharge fingerprint of an insulator string, operating on ground under towers.

Some measurements on the electrical characteristics of insulator strings

Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1934
Outdoor measurements of power factor and impedance on various types of insulator strings are described and the results summarized. The best shape of insulator for unfavourable atmospheric conditions is discussed, and suggestions are made for further research.

On the voltage distribution across a string of suspension insulators

IEE-IERE Proceedings - India, 1976
A difference equation formulation is given for the problem of determining the voltage distribution across a string of suspension insulators, taking into account the capacitance Cg between the insulator hardware and the guard ring, and the conductance of the insulator.

Experimental measurement of electric field near the insulator string

STUDIES IN ENGINEERING AND EXACT SCIENCES
This paper explores the electric field distribution near a string of six NJ120 high voltage insulators through experimental measurements under various conditions. Using a distributed capacitance method with custom probes connected to an Arduino-based system, tests were conducted on clean and polluted insulators.
