Long-acting insulin analogues versus NPH insulin (human isophane insulin) for type 2 diabetes mellitus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
BACKGROUND: Despite indications from epidemiological trials that higher blood glucose concentrations are associated with a higher risk for developing micro- and macrovascular complications, evidence for a beneficial effect of antihyperglycaemic therapy ...

Insulin analogs and cancer

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2012
Today, insulin analogs are used in millions of diabetic patients. Insulin analogs have been developed to achieve more physiological insulin replacement in terms of time course of the effect.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

A cost-utility analysis of long-acting insulin analogues (detemir, glargine and degludec) for the treatment of adult type 1 diabetes in South Africa

open access: yesCost Effectiveness and Resource Allocation
Background Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a life-threatening condition that is managed with administered insulin. Intermediate- to long-acting insulin represents the basal insulin constituent of the total insulin used in treating T1DM.

Comparative efficacy and complications of long-acting and intermediate-acting insulin regimens for adults with type 1 diabetes: an individual patient data network meta-analysis

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2022
Objective To examine the comparative efficacy and complications of long-acting and intermediate-acting insulin for different patient characteristics for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).Design Systematic review and individual patient data (IPD) network ...

Insulin degludec: overview of a novel ultra long‐acting basal insulin

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2013
All the basal insulin products currently available have suboptimal pharmacokinetic ( PK ) properties, with none reliably providing a reproducible and peakless pharmacodynamic ( PD ) effect that endures over 24 h from once‐daily dosing.

The heterodimeric amino acid transporters (HAT) of the SLC7/SLC3 family: A structure−function relationships and relevance to human pathology

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heterodimeric amino acid transporters consist of SLC7 and SLC3 family proteins arranged in a conserved structural organization. They regulate nutrient transport across cell membranes, supporting essential cellular functions. These transporters also contribute to xenobiotic/drug uptake and distribution.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
