Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Oral composition [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Oral care composition comprising a polymer obtainable by copolymerising a mixture of comonomers, from 5 to 95 mol % of the mixture of comonomers is constituted by a como no mer having the formula (I): (I) in which R is hydrogen or a methyl group, L is a ...

On the Evolution of Random Integer Compositions

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics
We explore how the asymptotic structure of a random $n$-term weak integer composition of $m$ evolves, as $m$ increases from zero. The primary focus is on establishing thresholds for the appearance and disappearance of substructures. These include the longest and shortest runs of zero terms or of nonzero terms, longest increasing runs, longest runs of ...

Consensus Formation and Change are Enhanced by Neutrality

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Neutral agents are shown to enhance both the formation and overturning of consensus in collective decision‐making. A general mathematical model and experiments with locusts and humans reveal that neutrality enables robust consensus via simple interactions and accelerates consensus change by reducing effective population size.

The Distribution of Run Lengths in Integer Compositions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2011
We find explicitly the generating function for the number of compositions of $n$ that avoid all words on a given list of forbidden subwords, in the case where the forbidden words are pairwise letter-disjoint. From this we get the gf for compositions of $n$ with no $k$ consecutive parts equal, as well as the number with $m$ parts and no consecutive $k ...

Helix Alignment, Chevrons, and Edge Dislocations in Twist‐Bend Ferroelectric Nematics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The recently discovered twist‐bend ferroelectric nematic (NTBF) is the new member of the multiferroic family, representing a fluid with an oblique helicoidal (heliconical) periodic structure of spontaneous electric polarization. The work presents a thorough exploration of the material properties of this phase, how the periodic modulation of ...

Adjoints of Generalized Composition Operators with Linear Fractional Symbol

open access: yesExtracta Mathematicae, 2016
Given a positive integer n and φ : U → U, an analytic self-map of the open unit disc in the complex plane, the generalized composition operator Cφ(n) is defined by Cφ(n)f = f (n) ◦ φ for f belonging to some Hilbert space of analytic functions on U.

Routing of railway carriages: A case study [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
In the context of organizing timetables for railway companies the following railway carriage routing problem occurs. Given a timetable containing rail links with departure and destination times/stations and the composition of the trains, find a routing ...

De Novo Multi‐Mechanism Antimicrobial Peptide Design via Multimodal Deep Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Current AI‐driven peptide discovery often overlooks complex structural data. This study presents M3‐CAD, a generative pipeline that leverages 3D voxel coloring and a massive database of over 12 000 peptides to capture nuanced physicochemical contexts.

A Perspective on Interactive Theorem Provers in Physics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Into an interactive theorem provers (ITPs), one can write mathematical definitions, theorems and proofs, and the correctness of those results is automatically checked. This perspective goes over the best usage of ITPs within physics and motivates the open‐source community run project PhysLean, the aim of which is to be a library for digitalized physics
