Differentiation of intercalated cells in culture
Pediatric Nephrology, 1993The renal collecting duct is a heterogenous epithelium consisting of intercalated cells (ICCs) and principal cells (PCs). To test the hypothesis that the two cell types might originate from one another and to determine which one of the two is a stem cell, beta-ICCs and PCs were isolated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting and grown on permeable ...

Differentiation of Intercalated Cells in the Kidney
Physiology, 2011The intercalated cell of collecting ducts of the kidney is of two forms, the α form secretes acid, whereas the β form secretes HCO3. Here, we review recent work that shows that the α form is derived from the β form and that the pathway is mediated by an extracellular matrix protein called hensin/DMBT1.

Metals intercalated in graphite. V. A concentration cell with intercalated bromine
Canadian Journal of Chemistry, 1976Bromine intercalates can be used as electrodes in concentration cells. Voltages of the order of 50 mV can be obtained with thermal gradients of 60–75 °C, in the range 0–100 °C. The cell can be operated on a continuous basis by allowing the high activity electrode to distill bromine to the low activity electrode.

The intercalated cells of the amygdala
Journal of Comparative Neurology, 1986AbstractThe intercalated cell groups, or massa intercalata, of the amygdala have been studied in rodent brains with Golgi methods. They also have been examined in gallocyanin‐chromalum‐, AChE‐, and Timm‐stained rat brains. The Golgi data indicate that the intercalated cells are not confined to a series of isolated cell clumps but form a neuronal net ...

Isolation and culture of HCO3- -secreting intercalated cells
American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, 1989Intercalated cells of the distal nephron secrete either H+ or HCO3-. We have succeeded in isolating HCO3- -secreting intercalated cells from the rabbit kidney. When seeded onto collagen-coated permeable supports, these cells form monolayers with a resistance of 595 +/- 75 omega.cm2.

Lithium Intercalation Cells Without Metallic Lithium: and
Journal of The Electrochemical Society, 1987The authors studied the possibility of using a reducing intercalation compound such as MoO/sub 2/ or WO/sub 2/ as a replacement for metallic lithium in secondary electrochemical cells. In order to be of practical importance, a cell of this type requires good reversibility at both electrodes and a substantial potential difference between the two ...

Function and Regulation of Collecting Duct Intercalated Cells
Annual Review of Physiology, 1993Renal intercalated cells (IC) are interspersed among the segment-specific majority (principal) cells of the distal convoluted tubule, connecting tubule, and collecting duct (71, 144). Ultrastructurally, ICs are distinguished by their dark cytoplasm, high mitochondrial density, cytoplasmic tubulovesicular structures, and apical microprojections (87 ...

Recent advances in our understanding of intercalated cells
Current Opinion in Nephrology & Hypertension, 2005This review will summarize newly described novel functions of renal intercalated cells.Over the past 20 years, the importance of intercalated cells in the process of renal net acid excretion has been recognized. More recently, many of the molecular mechanisms responsible for this cellular function have been described.

Convergent extension by intercalation without mediolaterally fixed cell motion
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2009We construct and implement a stochastic model of convergent extension, using a minimal set of assumptions on cell behavior. In addition to the basic assumptions of volume conservation, random cell motion, and cell-cell and cell-ECM adhesion, and a non-standard assumption that cytoskeletal polymerization generates an internal pressure tending to keep ...
