GENETIC ASPECTS OF PANNICULITIS IN A RUSSIAN POPULATION: A PILOT STUDY
Numerous clinical observations show that the human genetic background plays an important role in predisposition to many diseases. Objective: to investigate a possible relationship of the polymorphisms in 19 A/G leptin (LEP) gene, in the interleukin (IL)-

Biological role of interleukin 1 receptor antagonist isoforms [PDF]
The interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL1Ra) family of molecules now includes one secreted isoform (sIL1Ra) and three intracellular isoforms (icIL1Ra1, 2, and 3). Extensive evidence indicates that the sole biological function of sIL1Ra seems to be to competitively inhibit IL1 binding to cell-surface receptors.

Interleukin-1 polymorphisms associated with increased risk of gastric cancer [PDF]
Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with a variety of clinical outcomes including gastric cancer and duodenal ulcer disease. The reasons for this variation are not clear, but the gastric physiological response is influenced by the severity and ...

Strength through diversity: how cancers thrive when clones cooperate
Intratumor heterogeneity can offer direct benefits to the tumor through cooperation between different clones. In this review, Kuiken et al. discuss existing evidence for clonal cooperativity to identify overarching principles, and highlight how novel technological developments could address remaining open questions.

Interleukin Gene Marker for Febrile Seizures
The use of polymorphisms for interleukin IB (IL-1B) exon 5 and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) as markers of susceptibility to febrile seizures was evaluated in Taiwanese children (group 1: 51 with febrile convulsions and group 2: 83 normal ...

Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (anakinra) for Schnitzler syndrome [PDF]
Schnitzler syndrome is a rare autoinflammatory disease, which is defined by the presence of two major criteria: chronic urticaria and monoclonal immunoglobulin M (IgM) or immunoglobulin G gammopathy, in combination with at least two additional minor criteria: recurrent fever, leukocytosis and/or elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), objective signs of ...

Biologic treatments in rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis [PDF]
A number of biological approaches to the management of inflammtory arthropathies have been explored. These include the development of IL-1 receptor antagonists and TNF antagonists. Four biological agents are currently marketed in Europe.

Novel anti-tumour necrosis factor receptor-1 (TNFR1) domain antibody prevents pulmonary inflammation in experimental acute lung injury. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is a pleiotropic cytokine with both injurious and protective functions, which are thought to diverge at the level of its two cell surface receptors, TNFR1 and TNFR2.

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve
