Molecular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of silicosis are not fully understood. Exposure to crystalline silica leads to the activation of signaling pathways controlling the production and secretion of inflammatory mediators. Inflammatory cytokines are noted as important candidate genes for fibrotic lung diseases.
