ALS With and Without Upper Motor Neuron Signs: A Comparative Study Supporting the Gold Coast Criteria

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective The Gold Coast criteria permit diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) even without upper motor neuron (UMN) signs. However, whether ALS patients with UMN signs (ALSwUMN) and those without (ALSwoUMN) share similar characteristics and prognoses remains unclear.

The relationship between keratin 18 and epithelial-derived tumors: as a diagnostic marker, prognostic marker, and its role in tumorigenesis

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
As a structural protein, keratin is mainly expressed in epithelial cells and skin appendages to provide mechanical support and external resistance. The keratin family has a total of 54 members, which are divided into type I and type II.

Intermediate Filaments as Organizers of Cellular Space: How They Affect Mitochondrial Structure and Function

open access: yesCells, 2016
Intermediate filaments together with actin filaments and microtubules form the cytoskeleton, which is a complex and highly dynamic 3D network. Intermediate filaments are the major mechanical stress protectors but also affect cell growth, differentiation,

Diffusion Spectrum Imaging Maps Early Axonal Loss and a Unique Progressive Signal in Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To delineate specific in vivo white matter pathology in neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) using diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) and define its clinical relevance. Methods DSI was performed on 42 NIID patients and 38 matched controls.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Synemin Redefined: Multiple Binding Partners Results in Multifunctionality

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2020
Historically synemin has been studied as an intermediate filament protein. However, synemin also binds the type II regulatory (R) subunit α of protein kinase A (PKA) and protein phosphatase type 2A, thus participating in the PKA and phosphoinositide 3 ...

The Human Intermediate Filament Database: comprehensive information on a gene family involved in many human diseases

open access: yesHuman Mutation, 2008
We describe a revised and expanded database on human intermediate filament proteins, a major component of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. The family of 70 intermediate filament genes (including those encoding keratins, desmins, and lamins) is now known to ...

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Micropleated Nanofibrous Filters for High‐Efficiency Submicron Aerosol Filtration: A Comparative Study with Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Gas Mask Filters

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents micropleated filters manufactured by needleless electrospinning. Nanofibers are deposited onto uniaxially pre‐stretched substrates that contract upon release, forming densely packed micropleats. This architecture increases effective surface area without enlarging the filter size, achieving quality factors comparable to those of ...

An Atypical Tropomyosin in Drosophila with Intermediate Filament-like Properties

open access: yesCell Reports, 2016
A longstanding mystery has been the absence of cytoplasmic intermediate filaments (IFs) from Drosophila despite their importance in other organisms.
